"Watch Out for That Ring"
wes-connors19 August 2011
Stopping in for coffee, Malloy (Frank Schofield) interrupts Roger (Louis Edmonds) arguing with Sam (David Ford). Reminding Sam they've been friends for about 30 years, Malloy tries unsuccessfully to get information about 1956's events from Sam. Burke (Mitchell Ryan) telephones Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) at Collinwood to let her know he found the ring she left for him to find, two episodes ago. Roger arrives for coffee at the hotel restaurant (from silent Susie) and sees Burke with Carolyn's ring...

Alone with an unresponsive Sam and saying, "I thought all you great artists could hold your liquor," Malloy decides to loosen Sam's tongue by getting him drunk...

Everyone does a good job in this one. Clearly, Mr. Ford is comfortable in his new job as Sam the alcoholic painter. Note Roger's forehead wound is addressed more properly in make-up than was evident in the previous episode. There isn't much coffee in Mr. Schofield's cup, but he fills Ford's glass well. "Dark Shadows" had been good at showing real food and drink. We get good screen cap of Burke's sketch. There is nicely matched film of Carolyn entering and exiting the "Collins Port Inn"...

Warning: Spoilers
If you have ever explored the northeast coast, you've seen inns like the one representing the Collinsport where Burke and Carolyn meet for lunch. Tge episode picks up directly after the previous one where Bill walks in on Sam and Roger having a heated episode. Roger exits, finds Burke and argues with him about returning Carolyn's ring which Burke refuses. Bill gets Sam drunk so he'll open up about Roger and the past, and it becomes very clear that Bill is longing to destroy Roger. But why? More mystery as it appears that Roger has enemies that he isn't even aware of, and Bill is loyal only to Elizabeth. The plot thickens just like a great Maine fog.....

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 40 of the show is somewhat middling but it has elements of interest. The continued chasing of Burke Devlin by the silly Carolyn is rather patience-testing and feels like padding more than anything else. More interesting is the vague conversation from an increasingly drunken Sam, who continues to hint at his past connection to Roger.
