The Big Knockout

Hypo Bandit is a well crafted, sharper than usual episode of Highway Patrol, featuring an urbane well dressed criminal and his not very bright wife. His modus operandi is to send his wife into a store to check out the layout, then, after she leaves, enter the store, deliver a knockout dose of some kind to the owner or manager with with hypodermic needle, take the money and run. This couple has a good thing going for a while.

The bandit's Achilles heel is that he doesn't know how to administer his shots professionally. He has some background in health care but never learned how to use a needle properly, which leads to some unintended consequences. The good stuff here is the confident, good looking villain, as played by Richard Vath, an obscure actor whom I know absolutely nothing about. In appearance and manner he resembles B leading man Kent Taylor, which makes him somewhat attractive in spite of his criminal tendencies.

As an entry in the Highway Patrol seres, this is top of the line. This guy's a clever fellow, smart but with little formal education, he sees himself as superior to others, uses his clueless wife as his yes-woman. I found this episode well above average due to its far more complex and intelligent than usual villain, who's quite sophisticated for a small time criminal, and somewhat of a dandy, which makes him a bit sympathetic, to this viewer anyway, and while I wouldn't say I was rooting for him, to succeed I could see why some people might have found him charming. If this were another type of TV series the story could easily have been expanded to an hour, which have made it even better

Bonnie & Clyde?

An episode like this had me wishing for high school again. Catch actress Vail (Anita) in her campus queen outfit of the day—tight skirt, tight sweater, and a gallery of salivating boys. Too bad this is her one and only screen credit, but then sweet as she is, her acting is a little shaky. Then there's that '57 Batmobile the fugitive couple drives with enough fender for three more cars. In those days they called it "conspicuous consumption".

It's an okay episode that focuses mainly on the fugitive couple. Joe's (Vath) modus operandi is a little different. Before stealing loot from a shop, he injects the clerk with a knockout drop. That way there's no surprises. And that's after Anita's cased the joint for only one clerk. Trouble is Joe's pretty shaky with the tricky drops, so the victim's lucky to wake up at all, which a few don't. So you know who's swinging into action as a result.

A series strength was emphasis on location filming. Thus we see numerous shots of San Fernando Valley streets and LA countryside, circa 1957. Also, can't help thinking that if Joe weren't such a conceited jerk, Anita has enough natural appeal to make their doomed relationship rather poignant. Anyway, all in all, it's the fugitive couple that dominates this okay entry.

Highway Patrol: Hypo Bandit (1957)

Our family would never miss this TV show. I was a middle-class kid living in Michigan, had good parents and one brother. As a kid, I was truly surprised by what criminals actually did in their lives.

I believe they used actual cases from the Highway Patrol, Texas Rangers, etc. and they were exciting stories to watch as far as I am concerned!

Broderick Crawford always displays great acting in this series Highway Patrol and his movies.

The "Hypo Bandit" episode had a married couple using some type of "Knock Out Drug" to disable the victim in order to rob the merchant.
