Nice two hander

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was a neat, self-contained episode of DARK SHADOWS that for the most part plays out as a two-hander between Burke Devlin and the mixed-up David Collins. Mitchell Ryan has developed a winning persona here and goes from strength to strength while David is an effectively messed up presence. The dialogue keeps you guessing as to the character intentions but Ryan's very last scene is perfectly played and most welcome.

"What are you supposed to be? A doorstop?"

Warning: Spoilers
So says Burke Devlin upon his introduction to the troubled David Collins, immediately recognizing him simply through assumption. Of course, David uses this as an excuse to plant the valve from Roger's car under Burke's couch cushion. Scenes between Elizabeth, Carolyn and Victoria show Elizabeth's horror over the possible chance that Victoria was right, but obviously adoring her nephew, she doesn't admit those suspicions. Once again, it's a very stormy night, even though Carolyn claims that they haven't had a storm since Victoria arrived. It's obvious that Carolyn sees David as a problem child. Burke tells David of the good times he had with David's parents, giving David the chance to show both vulnerability, innocence and manipulation. It's a very good episode. Joan Bennett flubs a ok ine, but it's done so naturally that you may not even notice.

"The Horns Kept Poking Holes in My Hat"

As evening falls and a storm brews, Liz (Joan Bennett) tells Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) she is concerned about David. As we know from the previous episode, David (David Henesy) is at the Collins Port Inn, intending to plant evidence in Burke's room. But Burke (Mitchell Ryan) is suspicious... We have an attempt to explain Liz' unbelievable insistence David is innocent, and her near accusation of Vicki (Alexandra Moltke); Elizabeth Collins Stoddard is a very troubled woman. She also has trouble with lines, especially "my brother's accident," while Mr. Ryan can't remember if it's David, Dave, or Davy...

*** Dark Shadows 1966 ABC #29 (8/4/66) John Sedwick ~ Joan Bennett, Mitchell Ryan, Nancy Barrett, Alexandra Moltke...
