While the biggest entertainment companies are caught in an SVOD fight to the death, viewership numbers suggest audiences are spending more time with free streamers. Industry watchers have noted the increasing rise of the free Tubi service as a noteworthy success. According to Nielsen, people spent more time watching Tubi than Peacock, Max, or Paramount+ last month.
The success isn’t just because Tubi is free. Pluto TV is also free, but Nielsen reports it only pulled half the viewership of Tubi in March.
So why is Tubi white hot these days?
CEO Anjali Sud explained the streamer’s strategy on the podcast “The Town.” Tubi isn’t chasing the same audiences as Netflix or Hulu. “Forty percent of our audience are not on other traditional streamers,” Sud said.
The company is planning to focus more on underserved audiences moving forward. “You are going to see us use original (movies...

If there ever was a based-on-a-true-story movie that called for a sequel, it’s “The Social Network,” director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 classic about the founding of Facebook. The early years covered in the film were just the beginning of the Mark Zuckerberg story before Facebook (now Meta) became one of the most powerful companies on the planet, capable of shaping the future of democracy for the worse.
So it’s no wonder that Sorkin is working on a sort of sequel to “The Social Network.”
During an interview on the showbiz news podcast “The Town,” Sorkin was asked how he thinks Facebook and social media, in general, have impacted democracy in the 14 years since “The Social Network” came out.
After exchanging a look with his publicist, Sorkin told host Matthew Belloni and guest co-host Peter Hamby that he’s planning to write a movie about this topic.

When the site became open to absolutely anyone, it became a social platform in ways that exceeded anyone’s expectations. The famous site has become a hotbed of controversy with its ability to allow anyone to speak and post about whatever their heart desires and whatever comes to mind, regardless of public courtesy or discretion. David Fincher’s The Social Network explored the sinister roots of the site’s genesis and its rapid growth. Now, Aaron Sorkin has taken to the task of following up on his script with a sequel of sorts, exploring the unwavering influence it has on its users.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Captain's Holiday", Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was forced to take a vacation on the sexed-up beach resort planet of Risa where his impishly playful crew hoped he would have a drink, get laid, and return to the job less stern and more relaxed. Picard, a studious and intellectual fellow, would have been more content drinking tea and reading James Joyce's "Ulysses" in a dark room.
Luckily, Risa proves to be more exciting than Picard realized. He had no interest in beach shenanigans, but he did fall into the company of the utterly dazzling Indiana-Jone-type adventurer Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), a roguish tomb raider. Picard and Vash end up having to protect a rare, powerful artifact from time-traveling Vorgons, and fall in lust as a result. Picard returns to the Enterprise more relaxed and with a new romantic interest in the back of his mind.

It’s not a secret that Star Wars fandom is facing sort of a social crisis. In recent times, much of the focus of the franchise has been put on female leads and representation within live-action projects. Some fans consider it to be a good thing, while some are criticizing that direction.
The reasons behind the criticism are numerous, some fans are genuinely misogynistic, but a vast majority feel that the female and minority representation feels forced and therefore falls flat and bland, being there just for the sake of being there, which makes the overall products all that worse.
For many the face of that new woke direction is Kathleen Kennedy, a film producer and the current president of Lucasfilm. Justin Lin is ready to announce his next project, Stakehorse. Is it about a horse made of wooden stakes? Doubtful. Sources say the forthcoming crime thriller is like Ben Affleck’s 2010 banger The Town. The screenplay hails from Justin Piasecki, with a plot revolving around a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle patching up criminals who need medical attention under the table.
After shooting several chapters of the Fast and Furious saga and more, Lin is a clever and creative director with a sleek style all his own. In addition to directing Stakehorse, Lin will produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment studio with Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures. Perfect Storm’s Andrew Schneider and Sal Gatdula will exec produce.

Justin Lin has come aboard to direct Stakehorse, a crime thriller set up at Amazon MGM Studios.
Lin and his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner will also produce the feature, joining Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures on the project.
Justin Piasecki wrote the script, much of which is being kept in the stable. It is known that it centers on a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle doing medical work for criminals who may need work off the books.
Sources say the project is tonally similar to The Town, the crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck. The script landed near the top of the 2023 Black List.

Outside of his popularity in the MCU, Jeremy Renner has been a part of some excellent character-driven films that showed his range as an actor. He first gained significant praise early in his career playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 indie film Dahmer. He received further recognition for his incredible performances in The Town and The Hurt Locker.
Jeremy Renner as James Coughlin in The Town
His most overlooked film from the 2010’s is undoubtedly Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve years before he did Dune. Villeneuve’s film presented a unique sci-fi take, involving extra-terrestrial creatures which Renner was initially not sure of how it would turn out. The actor was blown away by the genius of Villeneuve and the brilliance of the film after watching it.

We often see reboots of beloved movies, including Batman, James Bond, and a number of Disney releases in Tinseltown. It attempted the same thing with Robin Hood. Aiming to reinvent the traditional English hero for a contemporary audience, Kevin Reynolds’ tried his hand at doing so in 1991, starring Alan Rickman.
Even though Robin Hood has been adapted for the big screen numerous times, Reynolds’ adaptation is still a commendable and highly entertaining one. At its core, the classic flick is an action-packed adventure with memorable characters and an inspirational story, underneath the drama that occurs behind the scenes.
Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Yes, things were very different behind the scenes. Rickman graciously defended his co-star Kevin Costner from baseless claims that the late actor’s performance outshined the Yellowstone star.

The Peaky Blinders movie is happening, and a big star is returning!
Creator Steven Knight confirmed the big news while attending the premiere of his BBC drama The Town, via Birmingham World.
The series originally premiered on BBC Two, with its final two seasons moving to BBC One. It then exploded in popularity after heading to Netflix. The series finale aired in April 2022, but the creator had already revealed a movie was on the way.
“The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be,” he told Esquire UK.

It looks like we haven’t seen the last of gangster Tommy Shelby after all. Speaking to Birmingham World at the premiere of his new BBC drama “The Town,” “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight confirmed that recent Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will be reprising his beloved role in the upcoming film version of the British crime drama. Knight said Murphy is “definitely” coming back, and filming on the “Peaky Blinders” movie kicks off this September.
“He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” Knight confirmed.
Variety has reached out to Murphy’s representatives for additional comment.
Murphy’s apparent return as Tommy Shelby for the “Peaky Blinders” movie isn’t too much of a shock considering the “Oppenheimer” star has long been vocal about his interest in starring in a “Peaky Blinders” film as long as the script was worthy enough.

A fun piece of trivia you'll often hear about "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" is that Keira Knightley played Queen Padmé Amidala's handmaiden, Sabé. The character was notable because of how much she looked like Padmé; it allowed her to be easily disguised as the Queen during risky trips into enemy territory. Sabé's job was basically to make sure that if anyone tried to assassinate the real Queen, they'd kill her instead; it's not the best job in the world, but we're sure it pays well.
At the time, Knightley's involvement in the film wasn't noteworthy. It would be another two years before she starred in "Prince of Thieves," and another two years before she got her breakout role in "Pirates of the Caribbean." Back in 1999, she was an unknown actress playing a bit part, notable only in that she looked like Natalie Portman if you put them in the same makeup and outfit.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” were box office disasters for Apple, but the two movies were profitable anyway thanks to digital purchase platforms.
Is “Killers of the Flower Moon” a business success? There are data points in favor of either side to the argument; those who would say that the film is a failure need only point to its underwhelming box office receipts, as it pulled in just $157 million in theaters compared to its reported $215 million budget. However, those who say that the movie has been successful can point to the fact that despite those low ticket sales, the movie became profitable thanks to its time on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms that allow viewers to rent or buy movies that are still in theaters. Such platforms are becoming increasingly important parts of the profitability equation for studios when planning out their film slates, and they may force analysts...

Matt Damon’s resume can boast of some of the most critically and commercially successful films in the history of Hollywood, which makes him one of the most accomplished movie stars in the world. Joining him on that list is none other than his best friend and prolific actor Ben Affleck, who together with Damon, won their first Oscar award.
Matt Damon in a still from The Bourne Identity
Ever since then, both stars have been seen several times sharing the screen and continuing to soar high in the industry. But in the past, Damon could’ve easily been part of one of the most critically acclaimed films that his friend was in and even directed, titled The Town. The reason why he rejected the role was because he didn’t like the script, while Affleck claimed that it was because he was too expensive for the project’s budget.

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.
