A Very "Conspicuous" Beaver
ccthemovieman-124 January 2007
Beaver and Larry Mondello are staying after school erasing the blackboard when Larry - no surprise here - tells Beaver a lie (and laughs to himself when Beaver is so dumb to believe it). He tells Beaver that Mrs. Rayburn, the school principal, has an "electric spanking machine" in the closet in her office. Beaver is shocked. He's never heard of such of thing, and is horrified.

Larry leaves when Beaver goes back to retrieve his cap that he left behind. En route, he gets nosy and goes into Mrs. Rayburn's office. The janitor comes by and Beaver quickly hides. The janitor then locks up and goes home for the night. Beaver is locked in the principal's office! He pulls the alarm, gets rescued and escorted home in a fire truck.

Oddly, that's only half the story. The next day, he and Larry are out in the park looking for four-leaf clovers. Once again, Larry leaves and Beaver gets in trouble. He sticks his head through an iron railing and it gets stuck! Now he needs to be rescued again, and he isn't anxious to be made "conspicuous" again. This part was pretty funny.

Despite Beaver being in all the trouble, the end has Beaver and Larry talking about parents with Beaver saying, "You know, Larry, you never can tell what they are going to do."

So what idea will Larry have next?
pensman28 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Beaver and Larry are staying after school to clean blackboards. Beaver asks why Larry was sent to the principal's office earlier that day. Larry had been sent to the principal for bringing his marbles to school. Larry claims that Mrs. Rayburn has a spanking machine in her closet that she uses on the big kids. Larry is literally laughing up his sleeve at Beaver as he can tell Beaver believed him. Larry and Beaver are leaving when Beaver realizes he forgot his hat, so he goes back for it while Larry leaves for home. Since Larry has left, Beaver decides this is his chance to sneak into Mrs. Rayburn's office and look for the spanking machine. There isn't anything in the closet but when Beaver hears the janitor coming he hides behind Mrs. Rayburn's desk. The janitor locks Beaver in. Unable to find a way out, Beaver pulls the fire alarm and is brought home on a fire truck.

Now Beaver has to explain what happened to Ward who is very upset with Beaver for being where he shouldn't be, worrying his mother, costing the city money, and possibly putting a fireman in danger. All this to be conspicuous. And how does Beaver feel right now? Beaver says he's hungry. Later Beaver asks Wally what dad meant by conspicuous; Wally basically says it means people are laughing at you for what you did. Beaver figures he shouldn't be conspicuous again.

Next day Ward is doing some home repairs and the boys are out. Beaver and Larry are looking for four leaf clovers. Beaver asks Larry why did he make that story up; Larry says everyone does that. Beaver agrees but says he was never to make up a story that people would believe. But Larry then he has to leave. Beaver is still looking for a four-leaf clover when he spots one just outside a metal rail fence. He tries reaching through but instead of just walking around, he squeezes his arm and head through and then gets his head stuck. Of course Judy Hensler walks by and tells her friend Beaver is the kid in her class who sits in the dumb row.

Since Beaver isn't home for lunch, June sends Wally out to look for him. Wally finds him but can't get him out. Wally suggests he get a) dad, b) a police man, c) a fireman; all get a no vote. Beaver finally decides Wally better get Dad even if he is conspicuous. Wally returns with both parents, and in a short time Ward found a man who works in the park and he was able to free Beaver. Ward tells Beaver he should always feel he can come to his father with a problem even if he feels conspicuous.

Later Beaver and Larry are talking about what happened and are trying to figure out why Beaver didn't get yelled at, this time.

Well we know as long as Larry is around with his suggestions or "dares" that Beaver will be getting into situations where he is conspicuous.

Of bowls of steam and spanking machines...
AlsExGal25 May 2024
... in other words, those are some friends Beaver has!

In season four Whity dares Beaver to find out if there is actual soup in a billboard soup bowl. In this episode, Larry Mondello makes up a tale about a spanking machine in Mrs. Rayburn's office closet that is used on the eighth graders. Larry and Beaver were cleaning the blackboards for the teacher, and then Larry leaves for the evening. Beaver cannot resist going into Mrs. Rayburn's office to look for that spanking machine. But while he is there the janitor locks Mrs. Rayburn's office door, accidentally locking Beaver inside. Beaver has to trip the fire alarm in the principal's office to be freed from his dilemma.

At home, Ward is stern with Beaver, talking about how he was in a place where he shouldn't be, costing the fire department time and money and in general being a "conspicuous" little boy. Wally has to explain to the beaver what that word means. The next day, Beaver again gets himself into an embarrassing dilemma, but this time he is afraid to ask somebody to get his father to help fearing he will again be condemned as conspicuous.

Ward blames himself for making Beaver feel like he could not come to him when he was in trouble, but what about Beaver's friends? Time and again they seem OK with setting Beaver up for trouble if they think they may profit by it or, as in this case, just get a laugh.

Wally has a prescient moment in this week's episode when he asks his dad if they should sue the city over Beaver's second embarrassing incident. In the 80s TV show "The New Leave It To Beaver", Wally is an attorney.

THE FAMOUS SPANKING MACHINE EPISODE.
tcchelsey28 December 2023
This story may have added fire to the urban myth or legend of "spanking machines" that were hidden in offices of school principals around the country. A fate worse than death.

Series writer Dick Conway may not have created the said "spanking machine" controversy, however he had a ton of fun with it and just let it roll. Without fail, yes, it's Larry who puts the bizarro idea in Beave's head in the first place, pointing to principal Mrs. Rayburn -- who he claims has one of those horrible machines in her closet.

Accordingly... Beaver has to see it for himself and after some "sneaking" around the school, manages to enter Mrs. Rayburn's office and gets locked in. Don't y'all love it? Creative writing on the part of Dick Conway.

But there's more. This episode actually holds the distinction of creating TWO classic problems for Beave. He also winds up getting his head stuck in a park fence --and don't try this at home! This goofy scene, obviously inspired by the THREE STOOGES, is perhaps the most rerun clip of the series, and with lots of photos for posterity. The shot of Beaver with his head stuck seems to pop up everywhere. Your heart really goes out to this little guy with big problems.

Interestingly, according to notes, the crew filmed the scene at Forest Lawn Cemetary in Glendale, California. It also makes you wonder if anything else was originally planned for poor Beave? Hmmm?

The price of fame the HARD way. SEASON 2 EPISODE 26 remastered Universal dvd box set. Check out the classic color cover.

Gullible Beaver Pays the Price
StrictlyConfidential10 November 2020
(*Wally to June quote*) - "Beaver's not always the little angel that you and Dad think he is."

Beaver makes a real fool of himself for believing Larry's story about a spankin' machine that supposed to be in the closet of principal Rayburn's office. (Like - Duh!)

And, (if that wasn't enough trouble for Beaver) - He later gets his head stuck between the bars of a park fence while searching for a 4-leaf clover.

Anyway - Not wanting to make himself conspicuous, Beaver learns a tough lesson about asking for the proper help when he needs it.
