A Boring, Average and Normal Life
claudio_carvalho8 June 2009
Dexter enjoys isolation and recalls his adolescence when he went to the junior high school prom with his neighbor following his stepfather's advice. Rita tells him about the disappearance of Ernesto, the fiancé of her colleague Yelina that has been threatened by the coyote that has helped him in the illegal immigration to marry Yelina. Dexter stalks Jorge Castillo, who owns a junkyard, to investigate whether he is guilt or not. Meanwhile, Sergeant Doakes and Debra interrogate the traumatized security guard Tony Tucci and Debra tries an unconventional approach to get information from Tucci, under the disapproval of Doakes. Dexter finds that Angel is separated of his wife and realizes that normal people may also have secrets and dreams.

In this great episode, Dexter discovers the secret dream of Rita of having a boring, average and normal life after killing ambitious human traffickers. Debra successfully uses a different method of interrogation achieving great results in the investigation of the Ice Truck Killer and rewards Tony Tucci accordingly. My vote is nine.

Dexter gets help on relationships.
chillwill9221 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
"Love American Style"'s primary theme was around Dexter attempting to learn how to maintain his relationship with Rita (Julie Benz). This theme is supported through the always-fun and informative flashbacks to Dexter's boyhood with Harry (James Remar), who attempts to help him through faking a romantic date. Tony Tucci (Brad William Henke) recuperates in the hospital while discussing his captor, the Ice Truck Killer, with Debra and Doakes. They manage to glean some important tidbits, despite Tucci's post-traumatic stress, and even a DNA sample from the killer himself. The best scene is easily the final scene, yet another of Dexter's killings, with an ending that leaves open an endless realm of possibilities.

Another Great, Chilling Episode!
g-bodyl26 December 2013
The fifth episode of Dexter continues the thrilling story of the Ice Truck Killer and the hunt to catch him. As the season progresses, the story gets a little darker and darker. I like how they incorporated even flashbacks of Dexter's childhood here and we get to see what his ideas of love is past and present. I loved how one of the major themes here is love and how Dexter tries to find love to seem normal.

This episode, "Love American Style" is about how Rita's friend fiancée goes missing and Dexter inquires about him and finds out that there is this guy named Jorge Castillo who murders Cuban immigrants if they don't pay him. Meanwhile, Debra gets new leads on the Ice Truck Killer after talking to the victim to have survived this killer's brutality.

Overall, this is a really good episode and is really tense but very engaging. Even though these episodes are nearly an hour long, we don't want them to end. I must say Dexter is a really interesting guy and I liked the way how he went about his victims especially in this episode. I rate this episode 9/10.

Loved Love

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Dexter ponders the complexities of human relationships while hunting someone who traffics Cuban refugees and kills them if they can't pay his fees.

Plot provides a nice vehicle to see how someone emotionally detached deals w/the complexities of human relationships while trying to maintain his "normal" front. Some strong material for Debra and a nice late twist to the plot re: Dexter's prey helps stick the landing.

A quote from E05

Too bad- I never enjoy making someone a widow. They are so happy. She has no clue who she's with. Maybe that's the key to a successful relatonship.

Masuka: These rat bastards were repeat customers.

Warning: Spoilers
Debra and the rest of the squad start to make headway when one of the Ice Truck Killer victims is found alive. Meanwhile, Dexter stalks a murderous human-trafficker.

Whenever Doakes comes on screen and he is not on one of his personal crusades, I am already ready to laugh, funny every time. ;] Deb is psyched about the potential DNA and fingerprints, but Doakes crushes her excitement by telling her it's her own cigarette butt. Doakes: You were smoking at a crime scene. She tries to say she was far away. Doakes: The whole area is a crime scene. You should know that by now, even if you are from Vice. Shanda: Why don't you just calm the hell down, my brother? Doakes: who the f*** is this? hehe.

The Ice Truck Killer plot is good, but the human-trafficker one isn't that interesting. Plus Dex is having troubles with Rita, and not in a good way.

A Normal Life [9.2/10]

Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 1 Episode 5 ''Love American Style'' (S1. E5): Episode 4 was awesome and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So Rita wants to help a maid and now Dexter is involved? Sounds like he is about to find his next victim. When Dexter said ''Sorry, I just assumed you were Cuban'' and the guy answers ''American pal, just like you''. That was funny. Lol Dexter saying ''What about communication and trust?'' and Angel keeps saying ''La pasion'', these two are funny together. This creep drowns people and then getting rid of the bodies. Dexter knows now what to do. They have a partial print of the killer? Now that's good. So both Rita and Dexter want a ''normal'' life. Overall an amazing episode, my rating is 9.2/10.

America's favorite serial killer
dannylee-7808215 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What draws me to Dexter is that what makes him unlike human is what makes him...human. His struggles with relationship, connection, secrets and emotion are what normal people struggle with too, albeit not as extreme as Dexter. His vulnerability with these struggles, narrated with his voiceovers, creates a sense of connection with the audience and I am very much starting to enjoy this character, which is all I need to appreciate a show.

However, I really don't like Debra, who strikes me as a very awkward and cliche character. I also find some stupidity in the plots like Jorge just following the candles and walking into a mysterious van. I am not too sure about that kind of things. I understand this show's 15 years old so I can handle those weird moments just with my love for Dex.

Another boring Dexter episode
jpapanone6 March 2021
It is just the first season...so i have no problem with giving this a season to find its identity and work out the kinks.

But...dexter fails to keep me engaged like other shows do...like Breaking Bad.

Again...too much annoying laguerta and doakes. I get that they have to write the antagonism into it...but it just gets annoying. I comPre it to Lassiter in early seasons of Psych. Just uncalled for dickishness. And here on Dexter...its a lot more aggressive.

This far into the series, I'm wondering...
silverton-379598 November 2020
...Does he keep up this voice-over commentary forever? The actor playing Dexter is annoying enough without the constant voice-over lines. This might turn out to be a deal breaker for me. I hate the narration.
