Doctor Who: Invasion of the Dinosaurs: Part 4 starts as the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) manages to save Sarh Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) just in the nick of time before she becomes dinosaur food, it becomes clear to the Doctor that a deliberate attempt was made on Sarah's life & that there are traitors amongst they're numbers. Both the Doctor & Sarah are convinced that a tremendous amount of energy is needed to cause the temporal displacements & conclude that if they find the power source they find those responsible, the Doctor continues with his gadgets while Sarah decides to use her journalistic instincts & a bit of detective work to discover the power source which gets them both into heaps of trouble...
This Doctor Who adventure was episode 8 from season 11 & aired here in the UK during early 1974, directed by Paddy Russell this is another fine story from the Pertwee era. The script by Malcolm Hulke is continuing to hold my interest as the story unfolds & more is revealed. There are still loose ends that make me want to watch the final two episodes & there was another interesting plot thread that was introduced during this part. The dinosaur action is at a minimum in Part 4 & it focuses more on the human character's but that's no bad thing although there's a weak cliffhanger at the end of this one. As with most of these old Doctor Who's it's good fun, it's entertaining & it only lasts for 25 minutes so it doesn't outstay it's welcome.
The worst special effect of the story so far rears it's ugly head during Part 4, the attack by the Pterodactyl on the Doctor is pretty bad & probably the first time where the poor special effects have really hurt the overall effectiveness of a scene. I can forgive bad effects if they're fun & have had some effort put into them but this Pterodactyl attack is just plain bad complete with terrible sound effects. This particular episode has the distinction of featuring the debut appearance of the Doctor's futuristic car & even though it's never actually referred to as such on screen it's since become known as the Whomobile, it's an odd looking thing to say the least when viewed these days that seems like a cross between a car & a hovercraft complete with wings.
Invasion of the Dinosaurs is a good Pertwee story that makes for good entertainment & is still holding my interest with a further two episodes to go.
