Though we’re likely just two months from Arnaud Desplechin’s next feature Spectateurs! he’s already mobilized an enviable team for the next-next project. Ecran Total reports Léa Seydoux (his collaborator on Deception and Oh Mercy!), Jason Schwartzman, John Turturro, and Golshifteh Farahani (previously of Brother and Sister) are leading The Thing That Hurts, which has just secured financing from the Belgian entity Wallimage and will be supported by CG Cinéma.
Early details are scant, except notice that The Thing That Hurts shoots in Brussels and (per quick translation) “evokes the meeting, following the death of a famous American psychotherapist based in Paris, of some of her patients, who confided in their relationship with the deceased.” Desplechin’s cinema is nothing if not the mingling of memory with grief––these four playing in that world is nearly as sterling a guarantee as the film struggling to receive U.S.

Exclusive: Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather of Harlem) has been tapped to star opposite Denzel Washington in Apple and A24’s High and Low, an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller, from filmmaker Spike Lee.
She comes to the project following collaborations with Lee on his acclaimed Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, based on his classic 1986 film, as well as his movies Chi-Raq and Oldboy.
Loosely based on the 1959 novel King’s Ransom, written by Evan Hunter under the pen name Ed McBain, the original High and Low watches as a shoe company executive becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. It’s unclear how closely Lee’s film will hew to the original storyline, and there’s no word yet as to the role Hadera will play.

The NBC sitcom "Night Court" was a satirical take on the zany and chaotic underworld of the midnight shift at the courthouse. With an unconventional, free-loving judge at the helm of this circus, there's no telling what might happen. The series was such a massive hit that it ran for nine whole seasons, featuring a cast of relatively unknown actors that, when assembled, formed one of the most acclaimed ensembles of all time. The show won eight Primetime Emmys and was nominated no less than 32 times. "Night Court" won in a variety of categories, but the actor that ended up taking home the most gold was John Larroquette, who played egotistical D.A. Dan Fielding.
A "Night Court" reboot landed on NBC in 2023. Sadly, few members of the original cast are still around to reprise their old roles, and the show is comprised almost entirely of new characters. Harry Anderson,...

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

When I booted up Mortal Kombat 1, I had no idea what was in store for me. In the months leading up to release, developer Netherrealm Studios had been positioning the game as a massive reinvention of the Mortal Kombat franchise with the introduction of the game’s new timeline reset and the “Kameo” system that allows players to bring in an additional fighter to use for assistance during combat. There was a very real fear that the series was moving too far away from everything that made the more recent entries in the franchise so great.
What I truly didn’t expect from Mortal Kombat 1, however, was the best damn entry in the franchise since 2011, and a game that leans more into the series’ roots than you might realize.
A Return to Form
Let’s be real, Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11 were bogged down by unsatisfying mechanics that distracted from the core combat.

ABC‘s The Company You Keep continues to recruit great talent for its stellar cast. From Bridget Regan in the premiere to Luke Kirby in episode 3, we have been mighty impressed. And the latest addition to the cast of The Company You Keep is Marin Hinkle, who plays Claire Fox in episode 4, “All In.”

And he was desperate to gain any traction in the polls, especially after his party threatened to pull their support. So when Claire called David, he was willing to hear her out.

Francois Ozon, whose latest film, “Peter von Kant,” opened the Berlinale, is already shooting his next movie, “Madeleine,” with a flurry of stars including Isabelle Huppert, Dany Boon and Fabrice Luchini.
The project, which is believed to be his most ambitious since “8 Women,” is being introduced to buyers at Cannes by Playtime and has already sparked strong interest. The plot is being kept under wraps, but Playtime is presenting the script to select buyers.
Ozon is one of the few bankable European directors whose films have opened at major festivals and traditionally sell around the world, including in the U.S.
“Madeleine” reteams Ozon with his regular producers, Eric and Nicolas Altmayer at Mandarin Cinema. Gaumont will be distributing the film in France, according to Satellifacts.
The cast also includes Rebecca Marder, the rising French star of Arnaud Desplechin’s “Tromperie” and Sandrine Kiberlain’s “Une jeune fille qui va bien.

Exclusive: Will Peltz (Unfriended), Sarah Dumont (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and Sydelle Noel (Glow) have signed on to star alongside Frank Grillo, Jaime King, Katherine Hughes and Josh Plasse in the horror-thriller Man’s Son, with Voltage Pictures coming aboard to launch international sales ahead of the upcoming Marché du Film.
The XYZ Films title from director Remy Grillo centers on a young couple (Hughes and Plasse) hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. When they choose an eclectic desert Airbnb as the perfect backdrop, the dark events of the audition material slowly slip into their reality, until they find themselves intertwined in an occult, sinister plot led by King and Grillo’s characters.
Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the script, which is inspired by modern occult activity in the California desert, with production to kick off in Yucca Valley, California this month.

“I’m 33 and I won’t say my name” states Léa Seydoux’s character at the start of Arnaud Desplechin’s labyrinthine Deception (Tromperie), adapted with Julie Peyr from the novel by Philip Roth. The woman says that she met Philip (Denis Podalydès) in London. London and New York will be the physical and spiritual locations of the tale, as a short introduction that makes you think of Woody Allen’s heyday, informs. The music by Desplechin’s longtime collaborator Grégoire Hetzel perfectly accompanies and subtly comments on the shifts in mood. We see the couple. He asks her to close her eyes and describe the room. Could this be a therapy session, we may think. No, he is testing how perceptive she is.

The previous films of French director Arnaud Desplechin have included, on a semi-regular basis, scenes of long, cerebral post-coital discussions (My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument); characters who are either Jewish (Esther Kahn) or linked to the former Easter Bloc (The Sentinel); narratives that break down the barriers between theater, cinema and non-fiction (Playing ‘In the Company of Men’); and sometimes all of the above at once (Ismael’s Ghosts, which opened Cannes in 2017).

Cannes is back — or so the festival organizers are insisting, announcing an official selection that’s bigger and more bullish than the (pre-pandemic) 2019 edition, boasting new films from Wes Anderson (“The French Dispatch”), Sean Penn (“Black Flag”) and Oliver Stone (“JFK: Through the Looking Glass”), to name three Americans from among a host of tantalizing international talents.
Festival topper Thierry Frémaux unveiled a staggering 65 titles at Thursday’s early-morning announcement — which is 20% more than the 54-movie lineup of two years earlier. And that’s not counting a promised beach-front blockbuster premiere or the closing-night film, whose title will remain under wraps until closer to the event, which was bumped from its usual early-May slot to July 6-17 this summer.
“Cinema is not dead,” he said at the press conference. From the look of it, Cannes could serve as the metaphorical defibrillator paddles needed to jolt the floundering corpse of theatrical exhibition back to life.

When the coronavirus pandemic shut down film and television production, Hollywood had to come up with new ways to allow casts and crews to continue to work safely. L.A. Castle Studios in Burbank, Calif., was already a one-stop shop for camera, lenses, sets, crew and lighting. But the studio, which features a full 4K virtual system powered by the Unreal video game engine, is also one of the few that can shoot with multiple freely moving cameras. That versatility, mixed with the technology, means a production can look like it takes place anywhere in the world, from the Oval Office to ancient Rome, at a fraction of what it would cost to travel there — if you could these days.
Owner Tim Pipher’s main concern was the same as that of many business owners when the shutdown happened: how to stay in business. With no productions scheduled for the foreseeable future,...

ABC is the latest network to firm up its midseason schedule, and there are some shockers.
For a start, American Idol will take up residence on two nights instead of one. The network previously stated the show will air Sunday nights.
But it will now air on Monday nights in addition to Sundays. This move also means that Dancing With the Stars will return later than usual.
The veteran dancing competition series will debut an all-athlete season April 30.
On the scripted side of things, Quantico will be joining the Shondaland ladies on Thursday nights after Scandal wraps its seventh and final season.
The rejigged version of the espionage drama will bow April 26. The Grey's Anatomy spinoff will also take on the 9/8c slot when it debuts March 22.

Michelle Williams is undoubtedly one of our finest actresses, and she’s gotten to be that way in part because of the choices that she makes. Sure, she might have started on teen drama “Dawson’s Creek,” but from the start of her career, she’s made a point of seeking out interesting films from up-and-coming auteurs and indie legends. Sure, not all of them have worked out (looking at you, “Deception” and “Incendiary”), but the results, and relationships with major filmmakers like Todd Haynes and Kelly Reichardt, and four Oscar nominations speak for themselves.

With a writers strike averted, the broadcast TV business’ attention — which had been divided for the past month between pilot production and WGA negotiations — is focusing squarely on the ongoing pilot season, now in its final stage heading into the May 15-18 upfronts. Pilots are being screened this week, followed by pickup and scheduling decisions that will be made over the next 10 days. Here is the latest edition of Deadline’s Pilot Buzz on where I hear the various pilots stand:
ABC’s needs may have changed significantly since it ordered 23 pilots — the most of any broadcast network — in January and early February. In the past few weeks, the network went aggressively after American Idol and is in final negotiations for a reboot, which would take up a lot of real estate on the midseason schedule, and it also is negotiating for the upcoming revival of the classic ABC sitcom Roseanne.

Though The Strangers successfully scared the hell out of audiences (and put director Bryan Bertino on the map), a sequel has yet to materialize, and it seems like every time buzz about one starts to build, it’s undercut a little while later.
And so it is that, despite Deception‘s Marcel Langenegger being tapped for the director’s chair and Ben Ketai (Chosen) emerging as a scribe last January, The Strangers 2 is now reportedly a long way off from rolling cameras.
Talking with Collider, producer Roy Lee has revealed that Relativity’s recent bankruptcy put the kibosh on any progress with the horror sequel. Apparently, though Ketai’s script is still kicking around at the studio, the issue is getting enough money to make a movie out of it.

The Wrap reports The Strangers 2 now has a director in Marcel Langenegger, who directed the thriller Deception starring Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor. The story picks up where the first film left off, this time seeing the masked killers (known as Man in the Mask, Pin Up Girl and Dollface) setting their sights on a family whose teenage children have just discovered their recent handy work in a mobile home park run by their uncle. Can this be just as creepy as the first? Making things complicated, the family discovers these grisly murders as they are taking a final bonding trip before sending their troubled teenage daughter to boarding school. With their aunt and uncle dead, the teens and their parents find themselves fighting to survive the night from The Strangers.
