The Unknown Enemy
hellraiser724 July 2020
This episode is another honorable mention, once again it was something different for G.I. Joe, it was pretty much "G.I. Joe" doing "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".

The whole episode is formatted like an anthology tale of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" as we have the established threat and the mounting suspense that builds up to the twist ending. However, since this is an episode of G.I. Joe we see it's usual flavor of over the top action.

I really like the anonymous calls which predated the film "Scream", really like the voice which sound just menacing and threatening could almost give you a chill. Just like with Barbecue and the rest of the Joe's, I'm wondering who the hell the Viper is and is he an ally or enemy. What's even more interesting is Cobra is just as much in the dark as G.I. Joe and us as even they don't know who the Viper is either.

It made me wonder is the Viper a secondary terrorist faction that is now moving in on the country and trying to take out the competition, wouldn't surprise me as in the world of the G.I. Joe comic series there have been attempts by different and unheard of factions before, but without any hard proof I just couldn't be sure. But then again why would the Viper feed bread crumbs to G.I. Joe on Cobra's activties?

The action is good as usual what's different about it is seeing G.I. Joe taking the offensive and Cobra on the defense. From a battle in one unexpected place a hidden Cobra rec center, what's really daft is how everyone of the Cobra Vipers still have their masks on which is totally unnecessary in a rec center, let alone everyone is still armed. It was just interesting and funny seeing how Cobra has a rec center at all, it makes sense like everyone else even the bad guys need some R and R. But the action sequence was cool seeing Lady Jaye use her Javelin as a pool cue and execute a shot that is impossible but hey it's G.I. Joe you roll with it.

Then there is also the battle on the streets and to the building of Extensive Enterprises (I'm still not sure what the heck Cobra sells there) where it's from the front of the building to up the interior. If there is one good thing out of the whole thing is G.I. Joe actually successfully fighting off Cobra.

So who is the Viper, you won't find out till the end, but it shows the unknown enemy is never who you think or imagine.
