Wow!
After the first episode I thought OK this just seems like a standard big robots vs big monsters kind of deal. I never could have predicted the tone of this second episode.
I found the Contrast between the loud battle scenes and the eerily quiet indoor scenes to be very effective. It really emphasises the sense of quiet and isolation the boy is experiencing. His aloneness.
I really loved this - we follow the boy in the aftermath of that epic battle, getting brought to live with the woman from Nerv who has spontaneously decided to adopt him. I guess because it seems as if his own father is showing no regard for the boy's upbringing.
The tone of the show switches to something unexpected and all of sudden we are in this weird situation of possible sexual tension between the woman and boy. We suddenly realise this is a show about humans. There are feelings here.
At first we don't know how the original battle played out, only that the boy must have survived somehow. It's revealed in a traumatic flashback that he has while lying on his Bed. This was cleverly done as we get to imagine experiencing it through his memory rather than just observing it for ourselves.
There's also a random penguin!
This second episode has got me very intrigued by this show.
