A Thoughtful Flashback!
g-bodyl15 August 2014
This is the twelfth episode of the third season of the Simpsons and it is utterly fantastic, perhaps because it's a funny albeit honest portrayal of the events that took place between Marge and Homer after the first flashback episode, "The Way We Were." I loved the cultural references namely the part where Homer spoiled the ending for The Empire Strikes Back.

In this episode, "I Married Marge," Marge believes she may be pregnant so she goes to the doctor. When she left, Homer tells the kids the story of how Homer and Marge created Bart on a golf course after the movie, how they got married in a lowlife place, and how Homer got his job at the nuclear power plant.

Overall, this is a great episode because it tends to be both funny and emotional. It gets pretty sad when we see Homer try to get after the one he loves despite the lack of money. It is true that they love each other, despite everything. This is a moving portrait of their love. I rate this episode 9/10.

Bittersweet flashback episode

Warning: Spoilers
Marge thinks that she may be pregnant again, but the latest test Homer bought for her is lousy, so she sets off to the doctor. Meanwhile, Homer grabs the opportunity to tell the kids (well, Maggie mostly; Bart and Lisa are on-and-off listeners) the story of his marriage to Marge, his employment in Burns' nuclear plant, and finally Bart's birth. This is one of the better episodes of season 3 up to this point (personally I like it more than "Flaming Moe's", which has a considerably higher IMDb rating), because it's not only funny (Homer's audition for Smithers, Homer spoiling the end of "The Empire Strikes Back", etc.), but it also has a lot of honest emotion, as well as just plain background information, to it: Homer's and Marge's words that show their love for each other are simple and beautifully written. Plus it leaves room for future episodes in the same format. *** out of 4.

Touching at Times

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this episode thinking it would be another boring flashback about how Marge and Homer met but I quickly realised it was nothing like that. It begins on a happy note but turns sad when Homer leaves Marge and her baby due to financial reasons. For a comedy cartoon I felt genuinely sad when he left and she was alone. When they met up at the Gulp N' Blow it was again, quite touching when you noticed the love for each other. And finally at the end when Homer got his dream job and can return to Marge is a great moment. This episode also shows him standing up against Patty and it proves his feelings for Marge. This by far one of my favourite episodes with a perfect mood, scenes and music.

Step aside, I'll deliver this baby

Homer tells the story of when he married Marge and their pregnancy.

This is another excellent nostalgic backstory episode with great comedy and character moments.

It has quite a sweet and heartfelt love story (marginally too sweet at times), but is littered with great humour. Patty and Selma have some epically timed one-liners and Homer is outstanding throughout. I never tire of watching the 'Empire Strikes Back' gag and the sequence when Marge is in labour.

The context in which Homer tells the story is also very funny, particularly the reactions of Bart and Lisa, plus the brilliant final high-five with Marge.

It's a 9.5/10 for me but I round upwards.

The Empire Strikes Back

Warning: Spoilers
I love reflecting on the early years of The Simpsons, having become a fan when it debuted all those years ago, and for me, in my most humble opinion, it's the first 10 seasons that represent the golden era, but that's my humble opinion. Anyway, I Married Marge was pretty much peak Simpsons, with pop culture references galore, including The Empire Strikes Back, Ms. Pac-Man and Charlie's Angels (the 1970s TV series). Anyway, we learn when Bart was conceived, and also how Homer gains his dignity to secure a job at the power plant, and Homer becomes triumphant. When Homer spoiled the big reveal in The Empire Strikes back, yes that was hilarious.

I Married Marge

Warning: Spoilers
Not sure how I feel about Homer and Marge getting married in a casino, I think but am not sure that that was ret-conned in some later episode. This is a good flashback episode, this is what shows should always do rather than those awful clipshows (which I know the Simpsons have also done), nevertheless this was a classic and very well done.

How It Began
Hitchcoc17 April 2022
When the family believes Marge is pregnant, Homer recounts how Bart was born and the turbulence of their first days together. Homer is working at a putt putt course, turning a crank on the windmill. He loses his job and has a kid on the way. We get to know about all the stuff he does to make a living. Also, the abuse he takes. And how stupid he is.

Excessively sentimental.
CubsandCulture24 August 2021
This is one of those episodes that the writers overdo the cheese and sentiment. Homer and Marge navigating their first pregnancy and early marriage is cute enough and compelling enough. But the mixture of the episode is a bit too sweet and a bit too grounded for what The Simpsons excel at. The show is at its best when it is faintly absurd.
