Rumbles of thunder as the ending of an era draws to a close...
arrival26 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
June, 1914, A very atmospheric episode this one - one of the final two (including the following ep.) leading up to 'The Great War' which is also the ending of an era - both in the real history of the world, and that of 'Upstairs, Downstairs' the series. Things were changing - never to be the same again... This can be distinctly felt in the great filming as the camera often 'scans' the quiet rooms and scenes of Eaton Place, prompting the Viewer to reflect upon the past - the characters that have come and gone in Eaton Place over the years; Lady Marjorie, Elizabeth, Sarah, Emily, Alfred, Roberts, etc.

There is also many disturbances between father and son - man and wife, maid and butler. This is a most unsettling time that would affect everyone...

Hazel has miscarried her child, causing an even bigger rift between she and Captain James. James first shows his real neglect of his wife, and his true feelings for his step cousin Georgina, and Richard displays his true feelings for his daughter-in-law Hazel, and Hudson airs his dislike of Hazel, who is defended by the loyal rose. This is beginning of the decline of Hazel Bellamy's tragic life that would come to a sad and untimely end four years later at the end of the War in 1918. She passes away, not really having the will to fight Influenza.

This was the penultimate episode in this, the third Season of 'Upstairs, Downstairs' - with just two more to go!
