Your social studies robot
kevinolzak3 July 2016
"Meet Your New Teacher: Batteries Not Included" examines an idea first mooted in "Dr. Epstein, I Presume," that of a social studies robot, here shown to be a computer console that fascinates the Sweathogs and gives Kotter more spare time than he's had for years. Woodman sees the machine as his ticket to the top, with the remedial grades at an all time high, but Gabe has his misgivings about being replaced by a computer. Ernest Harada makes the second of his three appearances as Mr. Jan of the school board, who arrives in time to notice some chicanery perpetrated by the Sweathogs. This was the second of three third season episodes in which John Travolta as Barbarino is absent, a more frequent occurrence during the show's final year.
