Cheesy "monster" salvaged by engaging dialog
garrard13 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Another "alien force" with malicious intent terrorizes the crew of the Seaview. Though the trick photography that creates the "monster" isn't the most impressive, it is Jim Mills' voice-over of the creature that makes this one memorable. He is given some really catchy interchanges with the crew, a credit to scriptwriter Hendrik Vollaerts, making the routine story a tad LESS routine.

Mills can be heard in other "Voyage" episodes as well as in "Lost in Space", especially as the head in the trio of "faceless" derby-wearing aliens that popped on the Robinson's planet several times.

"Shadowman" is typical of the last two seasons of the show, a "monster-of-the-week" tale but is one that should be heard and not seen.

Starring Jim Mills, Del Monroe And Bernard Harrmann

Nelson, Kowalski and Chip must deal with another evil space invasion on Seaview, this time from a deeeeeep voiced Shadowman (an actor in a black sheet) that has it in for man-kind. Shadowman is a sight and sound wonder that gets three points taken away because the budget is too small and there is too much of Chip. Seven out of ten.

The sights: Basehart does some cool visual acting in the final frames of the hour. Despite the use of a black sheet, the Shadowman is rather pleasing to the eye as the clever lighting on the set makes the creature look less like a Sheet Monster. The sounds: He is voiced by the highly under-rated voice artist: Jim Mills. And whenever Shadowman appears the stock Bernard Herrmann movie music comes to give the show a huge lift!

As well as the sights and sounds, it is always nice when Del Monroe (Kowalski) is more featured as he is here. The writer of this hour would do a sister show to this: The Deadly Cloud.
