A departure from the regular dramatic episodes.

Nice little comedic premise. Ann Prentiss is Paula's sister.

On the Lighter side

This is a Very Cute episode with an All Star Cast of both veteran Actors and 'not yet' famous actors such as James Brolin. I enjoyed watching the comedy side of a western. The antics of Trampas and David ( Doug McClure and a young David Hartman) were very enjoyable. On the odd side, one cast member is listed in the credits as Ann Prentiss. She is actually the well known actress Paula Prentiss. Why she is listed as Ann Prentiss is unknown since she and her real life husband stared in a TV sit com HE & SHE for two years prior to this episode as Paula Prentiss. This episode of the Virginian is also Not listed on her Bio. But there is No Doubt it is Paula... there has always been only One Paula Prentiss.

A very funny episode

I enjoyed this very funny episode. It was more like watching a comedy western than the usual Virginian episodes.

Comedy Wave in Buffalo Springs

I give this episode 10 stars because it's fun, ridiculous, and it has the Irish Rovers!

Even though I enjoy the entire series of The Virginian, there are some episodes that are quite heavy with drama and don't offer much in the way of laughter.

That's why an episode like this stands out - it's ridiculously fun!

The Irish Rovers appear a handful of times in Season 7 and their music is a nice touch to the series.

I also enjoy the fun opening sequence to this episode; it definitely sets the tone that this is not a regular old episode of The Virginian.

I wouldn't expect Crime Wave in Buffalo Springs to be everyone's cup of tea; and I would guess that an episode like this was used to either bring in new viewers, or reflect popular culture of the time, or to give regular viewers back in 1969 a break from the usual cattle-rustling escapade.

I think Crime Wave in Buffalo Springs is worth watching for anyone who enjoys the guest actors, the music of the Irish Rovers, and can appreciate the lighter, and rather ridiculous, side of westerns.

Buffalo Springs will never be the same

Saloon owner Yvonne DeCarlo and banker Tom Bosley are the leading citizens of Buffalo Springs. They've taken sides in a farmer's versus rancher range war. Into their lives come David Hartman who has quit Shiloh and Doug McClure who is trying to get him back.

Lots of slapstick style humor in this story. And a bit of romance for the adults and their children played by Carrie Snodgrass and James Brolin. Look also for Gary Vinson to play a dumb sheriff and the Irish Rovers as the staff at DeCarlo's saloon.

It is Ann Prentiss

Ann Prenitss starred in this episode with brother-in-law Richard Benjamin. Ann is Paula's younger sister. They really look (and sound) so much alike they could be twins.

Below par

This episode is below par because the slapstick is so grating. Buffoon characters, comical music, implausible storyline.

Most comedy of any Episode up to this point
jon-3686020 April 2024
Previous episodes mostly had bits of comedy here and there, but this episode easily has three times as much comedy as any previous episode. Also, the first major use of "stop action" so far in the series, where a scene suddenly stops, either to display Credits or into a Commercial Break.

It would be easy to make the mistake, when this episode was created, to try and get cast members to be funny when Comedy was not their strong suit. But there is no sign of this here, thanks to excellent Casting.

As a firm believer that you can never get too much of The Irish Rovers, this episode makes good use of them both musically and as supporting cast members.

Sorry but you cannot convince me that it is sacrilege for an episode of The Virginian to include this much comedy. It takes creative minds, and ideas like this, to keep a series going as long as The Virginian did. Especially by this point in time, when Westerns were few and far between.

SAD SLAPSTICK

To have so many stars of the future in this episode I can only shake my head at the overall stupidity and the direction of this show. Look at that cast it could have been a great one. One of the worst Virginia episodes I've ever seen:(

Slapstick. Elementary level buffoonery comedy.
sonrisante-110 January 2020
Cute If you like this style. All characters are out of character-not at all acting like themselves. Lots of recognizable guest stars. The series is usually more serious than this.
