I always enjoy it when they put real people and events in a story. Obviously, they have to spice it up a bit to make it more interesting, though I think many of the stories could stand well on their own fact- based accounts.
The writers changed the name of Deputy Grimes to Perry instead of A. W. (according to Wikipedia). The shootout actually happened on July 19 (not August 18). He died on July 21 on his 27th birthday. Though he was discovered in a field, he was discovered by railroad men then taken into custody. Of course, I suppose the Texas Rangers had to find Samm Bass so they could be made the heroes!
