TIGHTROPE – The Frame – 1959
This one is the third episode of 1959-60 undercover cop series, TIGHTROPE. The series ran for a total of 37 episodes and starred Mike Connors in the lead role. Connors is a deep undercover cop who is assigned to various cities across the country on tough cases. This episode is set in New York.
A man, David Morick, has just gotten sentenced to 8 years in prison for a jewel robbery. Morick has always claimed it was a frame job. The Detective, who made the arrest, Walter Coy, also smells a rat with the "just too good" evidence. Coy tells his boss, Tom McBride, his fear that they might have sent an innocent man up. McBride calls in a special undercover man, Mike Connors, to look into the matter.
Before Morick was nabbed, the number one suspect had been underworld boss, John Marley. And Marley's mob just happens to specialize in jewel heists. Connor's hits a few of the bars were Marley's crew are known to frequent. He flashes around a $10,000 ring that he would like to sell. This soon has all the right people interested in him. The mob sics the blonde knockout, Joan Tabor, to cozy up to the man and grill him for info.
That night, Connors is paid a bedroom visit by a gun wielding, L.Q. Jones. Jones tries to relieve Connors of the ring. Connors though turns the tables on Jones and fires him out into the hallway. Mob boss, Marley likes the cut of Connors jib and invites him to join the crew. Connors passes a few minor tests and is accepted into the inner circle.
Marley's boys are planning a huge diamond raid on a wholesaler that night. They are then going to meet an out of town fence. Connors gets the word to his New York Police contact about the raid, and the meeting with the fence.
The raid goes off without a hitch and the diamonds are all brought to the meeting with the fence. Now there is another twist. Marley intends to kill the fence after he gets paid. Then he will have both the cash, and the diamonds. Marley wants Connors to do the killing. All Connors can do is hope the Police hit the meeting place quickly. This they do, and the nasty types are soon under lock and key. Evidence is soon turned up that Morick was indeed framed by Marley. He is released from prison.
The series was produced by film noir vet, Russell Rouse. The two-time Oscar nominated, one time winner, wrote 36 of the 37 episodes. He also directed several of them. His film work as a director, include, THE WELL, HOUSE OF NUMBERS, WICKED WOMAN, THIEF, THE Oscar and NEW YORK CONFIDENTIAL.
