Janet instigates a contest between Jack & Chrissy, determined to prove that women have more willpower than men (especially a man like Jack). She will go without food, and he will go without women. Jack doesn't want to risk getting his macho pride wounded, so even when Janet reveals her ace in the hole (a girlfriend of Jacks' is in town, waiting for him at "their" hotel), Jack is determined to hold out as long as he can.
'The Fast' is an absolutely hilarious, rollicking episode that puts an appreciably comic spin on a "battle of the sexes" type plot. It also features a priceless subplot in which Mrs. Roper tries hypnotism on Chrissy to get her to abstain from eating, and the effect on Mr. Roper. Of course, given that Jacks' girlfriend is played by the gorgeous Angel Tompkins ("The Teacher"), one can see how incredibly frustrated he is that he can't put his hands on her. And, all the while, Janet is doing everything she can to trip Jack up while he tries to sabotage Chrissy's efforts (including teasing her with her favorite, chocolate cake).
John Ritter does some of his classic physical comedy in this bright script that ends in a most amusing coda with the Ropers. This episode is a must for series fans.
