Hard to Light a Fire
Hitchcoc22 September 2008
Another Holmes/Watson entry from the 1955 television series. This time it involves a blackmail scheme where fires are being set. The bad guys are trying to extort money from the British government and our boys are asked by Scotland Yard to intervene. There's nothing distinguished about this. In the Homes stories, LeStrade is a bit of a bungler. There is an absolutely ludicrous scene where he and a police sergeant go into Holmes laboratory and, lacking any knowledge of chemistry, begin to analyze a soil sample. They are going to do it like following a "cookery book." There are so many loose ends involved here that it just doesn't work. They do trace the dirt to a carpentry shed where a bomb may have been planted. Not much to recommend this one.

The Case of the Reluctant Carpenter

There are explosions all over London and Inspector Lestrade is under pressure to bring the culprit in.

However the bomber walks into Sherlock Holme's apartment. He demands money from the British government or else there would be more fires over London.

Only the extortionists mistakes Lestrade for Holmes. Lestrade was messing about in Holmes laboratory as Holmes was watching his flat from an adjacent building.

It all leads to a race against time as Holmes looks for a bomb and round up the baddies.

This is a silly and a forgettable story. It was so padded, the story is taken up with Lestrade and a policeman snooping about in Holmes flat.
