I have been fairly outspoken here on IMDb regarding SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH, that I do not like the way Melissa Joan Hart plays the part. Back in Season One, it kicked off cute, but went downhill fast, much like CHARMED, and totally similar with overt bratty behavior. Notice the way these witches treat other people with impatience. Everybody. In CHARMED there was that Leo boy that was so hen- pecked it was embarrassing to look at him, in SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH it is Harvey. Oh, and the dorkily unfunny sight gags! They escalate! They become mind-numbingly sickening! They are WITHOUT EXCEPTION never ever funny, just dorky. It got so during Seasons 3 and 4 that the only high point was niece Amanda, wow, she was cute!
I've not been keen on starting with Season 5, but I bought the whole lot at the onset, and, well, began watching today.
Everything at first seemed to be as dorky as ever. And I get clown-sick at the sight of clowns.
At least Nate Richards (Harvey Krinkle) is gone. The two older aunts are still there, and they're the problem. Zelda is one thing, but Hilda... Hilda is just... Man, observe this episode. Big ol' moo! The amount of lipstick there. Really. What more do I need to say?
But!!! They finally brought in a supporting cast that really can do it! There's this girl from (shudder) PUNKY BREWSTER, Roxie, and she promises to be fun, fun, fun and a perfect foil. Also Elisa Donovan from CLUELESS (hey, almost half the cast is from CLUELESS, kidding) another welcome addition.
Back at the original home, Zelda and awfully dreary Hilda continue to whittle away at the enjoyment. Look, Zelda I can take, but Hilda... When the scene shifts to the new dorm, there is hope, lots of it.
Salem, however corny, and however over-acted in places, is just a hoot! Love Salem!
All in all, a marked improvement, and the main character wasn't brattily obnoxious as she had all too often in previous episodes.
