The Pretender is Arthur of Brittany who is King John's nephew and thought to be dead.
When John annulled the marriage with Queen Hadwisa and marries 12 year old Isabella of France.
Hadwisa is not going to take this lying down. She is from the powerful Duke of Gloucester's family and they plan to unite with the northern barons to take on King John.
The convoluted plot involves Arthur joining the Merries. Then killing Queen Isabella as she makes a pilgrimage to an abbey and blaming it on Robin Hood and his Merries.
Gisburne has also been taken in by the Duke of Gloucester to join the rebellion. He will be on hand to make sure the Queen is assassinated and then kill the Merries.
Luckily the Sheriff of Nottingham is not in on this daft plan. A dog bite has left him delirious and severe pain. A barber surgeon has to patch him up as the physician is indisposed.
It is left to the Sheriff to warn Robin Hood to put a stop to all this nonsense.
