I think variations on this scam are still pretty common today.

In this installment of "Racket Squad", a woman comes to Captain Braddock (Reed Hadley) to talk to him about a scam she accidentally helped her friend to be a victim of recently. It seems she encouraged her friend to enter a contest where the winner would get some modeling lessons. However, when the friend goes to collect her prize, the folks give her a big razzle-dazzle--saying she was destined to be a star! And, because she was so particularly beautiful, they wanted to personally groom her to be a top model. Of course, this would cost money--and they got a few hundred off her. However, later, the hucksters really tried something unusual--they had another 'agent' meet with her and announce that she was so outstanding that he wanted to buy out her contract--and the costs kept mounting.

Such scams are still out there, as I remember folks sending me letters asking my daughters to go to modeling schools or purported to be talent scouts, so this sort of scam apparently is still alive and kicking! Informative and worth your time.
