"The Pharmacist's Mate" is apparently a true story and, oddly, this sort of thing apparently happened three times during WWII. What was this weird thing? Well, apparently crew members became deathly ill and needed surgery...and pharmacist's mates operated successfully. What makes this amazing is that these guys were NOT trained doctors but were men with very basic first aid training! But the problem was that at sea, there really was no other choice...and the submarines were too small to include doctors.
So is this installment of "Pulitzer Prize Theater" worth seeing? Absolutely. As you can assume, the story of this surgery earned a writer the Pulitzer back in 1943 and the story STILL is powerful today. Well written, very well acted and a teleplay that really sticks with you.
