Della breaks this case open- all because of a purse
kfo949418 March 2013
This episode begins at the Danceland Ballroom where a regular drunk named Albert Sanders is being thrown out. This was a small scene but will prove to be significant as the story progresses.

In a rather complex set of facts we find out that Mr Fredrick Archer, Ms Martha Rayburn along with a rough named Joe Gibbs- are running this International Model Agency that sends young women across the globe for work. Unbeknownst to the young girls, they are actually being used to smuggle drugs into the country through a secret compartment in a purse that is given to them by the agency.

It just so happens that one of the girls named Kim Lane has found out about the little scheme and decides to blackmail the agency. Knowing that she could put them out of business, the three people running the agency decided to rid themselves of Ms Lane. So they set up a patsy in the name of Albert Sander, our local drunk, to take the fall.

Perry gets involved as a court-appointed-attorney for the Sanders when his client gets charged with robbery and then murder. It is not long before Perry knows something in amiss in the dealings with the ballroom and the agency. He will have to drag out the courtroom proceedings and introduce some unsavory evidence before the scheme comes falling down.

Unlike most of the shows from the first season, this is one that the viewer really has to pay attention during the witness stand testimony. There was a lot of great stuff in this episode and then there was some slow moments where even the Judge seemed bored. There are some good moments as when Della goes in for a meeting at the modeling agency and gets looked over- plus we also get to see someone pull a gun on Perry and force him against the wall. It was an episode with two faces, at times full of action and at other times slow as molasses. Overall still a nice watch.

Heroin Sheik??

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Don't even LOOK at this review, if you haven't seen this episode ... OKAY? The reason is this : there's too much wrong with the case, such as ......

1) They found Kim Lane's jewelry under Sanders' trailer? Why would a holdup man toss jewelry? If it was junk, why take it out of the purse? It was nighttime, and so, dark. He would have had to hold on to it to see if it was good stuff that he could fence or hock. The subject didn't leave ANY fingerprints on the purse? Didn't Tragg think of that? I mean, it is actually called ROBBERY/HOMICIDE division for just that reason.

2) Why DID Inez leave? Coercion? Payoff? She was ready to testify, wasn't she? Why not just scream bloody murder when slimebucket grabbed her; after all, she was right outside of court, wasn't she?

3) What happened to the mink coat Perry and Della were looking for?

4) What happened to the check slimebucket took from Kim?

5) Even in 1959, the amount of narcotics (snow, horse, dust, skagg, smack ... fill in blank)is about two keys short of anything profitable on any market, and by that time organized elements controlled the imports of it.

Fred Sanders had one of the best reasons for drinking himself into the gutter, but they all boil down to one thing: self destruction. The A.A. big book covers a few of them quite nicely. I've NEVER seen anyone on this show recommend this lifesaver, and if it would work for a REAL gutter drunk like me (or Sanders), it'll work for anyone who wants it. Getting Fred a job isn't an answer to his problem; not a happy ending ...sorry.

When Della was in the model agency, no one else came close to her good looks, even though it was a MODEL AGENCY. I mean, I've never seen anyone as pretty as Barbara on this program, but they could've come close, you know? Paul is going to take out Inez BEFORE they get back the fur coat that Perry now owns. Pro Bono is one thing, but he's never thrown money away, has he??? Great acting, poor direction; good show.

Weak in Spots
Hitchcoc8 December 2021
Perry takes a pro-bono case when an idle drifter with a sad past is accused of murder. It all centers around a modeling agency where things are not as they seem. There are some rather weak plot elements here. There is also a pompous announcement by Perry about the evils of drugs. It sounded like scripted announcement by the sponsors. As is usually the case, it kept my interest and kept me guessing which of the suspects was the killer.

Another line of work
bkoganbing23 July 2014
This is not the first or the last freebie Perry Mason gave out because of his passion for justice. But his client basically is a down and out drifter who is being blamed for first a robbery and then a murder when one of the two robbery victims is found dead.

The late victim was a model who both worked for June Vincent's dance hall and did modeling for Ned Wever's agency. The girls also had another line of work and it's what got the victim killed.

She was also the mistress of millionaire Les Tremayne whom she was blackmailing. He didn't like being squeezed.

The drifter is Fred Sherman who just was a man who drifted into the wrong place and time.

Wait till you see what happens in court as Raymond Burr exposes a racket and finds a murderer.

It's in the Bag

Warning: Spoilers
***MAJOR SPOILERS*** Perry Mason out of the goodness of his heart takes on the case of falling down on his luck drunk Albert Sanders, Fred Sherman, Pro Bono or for free in the robbery of model agency head Fredric Archer III, Les Trmayne, and his top client Martha Rayburn, June Vincent, whom Sanders, in being dead drunk at the time, has absolute no knowledge of. Before Perry can get going top fashion model Kim Lane, Betty Utey, is found murdered by some kids playing baseball in an empty lot that again Sanders is the #1 suspect in murdering her.

As Perry checks out Kim's last hours on earth he finds out that she was blackmailing her boss Fredric Archer III about some business she had with him in doing modeling for him overseas! While all this is going on the hard luck Sanders is to now stand trial for both armed robbery and murder at the same time. It becomes apparent that something very fishy is going on in the Martha Rayburn model agency that Fredric Archer III is bankrolling! Which all leads to Las Vegas where Martha's secretary Inerz Kaylor, Karen Sharpe, in order to avoid testifying in Sanders' trial has fled to. And it's there that Perry is confronted by model agency honcho Joe Gibbs, Ned Wever, who pulls a gun on him when he checked out some of the late Kim Lane's mail.

****SPOILERS**** It's really no big surprise to find out who's Kim Lane's killer but the reasons for her murder is quite another story. It's discovered by Parry that the model agency that both Fredric Archer III together with his accomplices Martha Rayburn and Joe Gibbs ran was an international drug trafficking operation using the models to unknowingly smuggle heroin into the country in secret compartments in there purses. It was when Kim started to blackmail the trio that her fate was sealed. And as for the luckless Albert Sanders he was just a pasty set up to take the blame for every criminal act the three were involved in! No wonder Perry took on the case for free in that it was one of the easiest cases he ever handled. In that the killer of Kim Lane was so obvious to everyone watching even to the D.A in the case, who should have known better by not prosecuting it, Hamilton "Ham" Burger played by William Talman.

The Case of the Hesitant Hostess
Prismark1018 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The surprise here is Perry Mason taking a case pro bono.

He is a court appointed lawyer for down and out Albert Sander. He was charged for robbery and later the murder of a model.

This looks like a mundane case. There is a modelling agency run by some suspicious people. Anyone can be the murderer and the dead woman was blackmailing one of the owners.

The episode comes to life during the cross examination. It is one of these cases where Perry uses some daring and bluffing.

The models were unwitting drug mules and the dead woman found out about it.

You get a fair idea of who the murderer might be. They look like Lee Marvin.
