Lots of testimony in this episode, Della even takes the stand.
kfo949414 May 2013
If you like courtroom testimony then you are going love this episode since we have many people called to the witness stand in order for Perry to find the true murderer and save his client from the gas chamber. It appeared that Hamilton Burger had the upper hand on Mr Mason until Perry kept asking questions which lead to the truth of the matter seeing the light of day.

The story, which is more complex than needed, centers around an owner of a construction company named George Andrews. He has been having trouble with surprise inspections and was told to go see a political Mr Fit-it, Wilfred Borden, that would solve his problem for the right amount of cash.

Mr Borden, which also had another hobby as a photographer, is found murdered after George Andrews visit which lead to George being a suspect. Then when Lt Tragg finds the murder weapon in the glove compartment of Mr Andrews' car it will lead to murder warrants.

There is a lot going on in this episode which includes a car wreck, a story of kidnap, a divorce, an injury and of course a photo. The viewer has to be one their toes to keep all the testimony separate and to find out who is telling falsehoods. Perry will finally solve the mystery when someone makes an error on the stand and will have his client walking free and the viewers feeling satisfied with the show. Good Watch.

A Rock and a Hard Place

An architect and a fixer get into it but come to an agreement. Then there is a car accident where a coupl fashion models are involved. Della is on the scene. John Anderson, he of the husky voice, is the accused when the guy he had seen is murdered. Perry takes a picture of the legs of one of the models to use later. Ordinary but still good.

Beautiful Barbara
darbski4 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** In case anyone missed it, the models in this episode are at least two classes behind Della. Stay tuned, Barbara fans. John Anderson drives a Ford station wagon with whitewall tires and a cardboard sign advertising his construction company?? The taxi stand that Loretta call for a cab from has the name of the company very crudely painted out (probably with housepaint so they could remove it easily. Props department gets a demerit for that flaw.

Loretta was driving a stolen car (Plymouth Savoy), did they investigate that? Nope. It just laid there. The party Loretta was hosting was a sex hook-up for modeling clients (terrible witnesses), everyone there would have denied being there. Barbara does a great job of tripping when they were running from the doberman guard dogs. Most of the time, it's a laughable stunt when the girl trips, so the hero can rescue her or the monster (or murderer) can get her;, but this was very realistic - she was wearing high heels, and George and Perry were already holding on to her arms. This part of the scene shows what a terrific actress Barbara was.

Right from jump street, Perry knew that Loretta and Frank (snake oil voice),were lying, and he gave them a warning; they didn't get it. The gun is NOT good evidence. There is NO connection between George and Dawn; it would have been thrown out as evidence against George. Blood? George told Perry that the suit hadn't been cleaned in a long time, and explained a possible cause of the old blood drops. If George had been in the service, his type would have been on his dog tags. No doubt THAT link was gone. The stolen car. The timing of the divorce and re-marriage did not fit. *SPOILER*

From this point, Perry systematically disassembles Loretta and Frank's testimonies, and clearly leads them into positively incriminating themselves. It was clear that he didn't just want to get his client off; which he could have done easily just using the evidence I've shown; but wanted to nail down the guilty parties. It was delightful. What about the paid-off building inspectors?? Borden was a conniving crook, and as we all know "Bad friends bring bad luck" (Don Vito Corleone).

One part I was very interested in was when Perry called Della as a witness. She confirmed some details, and Burger declined to cross-examine her. This is the second time that the story line in the case involves pin-up models. In this episode, as well as the other (I can't remember the name of the episode) the actresses are simply no where near as good looking as Beautiful Della. One point is that Barbara Hale was so pretty and accomplished that she herself had been a photographer's model. Gil Elvgren used her a couple of times; one I believe was called "Have a heart", a Valentine's Day work. She also modeled for several other major product lines, as well as being a representative for Amana corporation. I wonder whet SHE thought of the furor over any aspersions cast upon these models...

Establishing times

Andrews (played by John Anderson) goes to see Perry about a car accident in which a woman may have been injured. Andrews did not report the accident to the police because it happened outside the home of a political fixer, whom Andrews had just seen. Andrews sensed something amiss in the accident, because the woman he first saw on the ground had been replaced. The fixer is found dead and Andrews is charged. Perry works through the various people, and the viewer can easily see which one of them is lying to Perry. Much courtroom time is spent on timelines and Perry presents a sur-rebuttal. The murderer's motive is not revealed until the epilog. Ralph Moody plays the hardware store owner from whom the murder weapon was stolen. There were no fingerprints on the weapon, which magically appeared in Andrews' glove compartment. Not one of the more interesting Masons. You sort of know who the villain is but not why. As for calendar girls, photography is a hobby of the fixer and his last roll of film has relevance to the timeline. Later Masons involve more advanced photography issues.

The Case of the Calendar Girl
Prismark1028 April 2024
Wilfred Borden is a political fixer and a keen photographer. Late at night he meets building contractor George Andrew (John Anderson) who is having issues with building inspectors.

George is hoping that Borden will make the problems disappear for a fee. Before George goes bust.

On his way home, George is involved in a car accident where a young woman gets injured. After he goes to get a flashlight, he notices the woman thrown from the car is different. The shoes have changed.

Fearing something suspicious he goes to see Perry Mason. Later George is arrested for the murder of Wilfred Borden.

Perry Mason, Della and George had gone to the Borden's house. Perry was sure that the originally injured woman might be in the estate looking for help.

Proceedings take place in a preliminary hearing to establish that there is a triable case.

It is clear very early on that Hamilton Burger has no triable case. You have two young women, one who has acted suspiciously. That was the least of it.

Surprisingly Paul Drake had little to do. Perry had turned photographer and managed to take pictures of a lady with bruises. It would go on to become very important.

I Love I Love My Calendar Girl
bkoganbing26 April 2012
You know that when the participant in an automobile accident reaches first for his lawyer before calling the cops to report the accident we know there's a problem. That's what John Anderson does in this Perry Mason episode after he hits a car where the woman looks dazed and then disappears on him.

Anderson's reason for not reporting the accident is a conundrum for him at least. He just came from the estate of a well known political fixer. Anderson is the construction trade and the building inspectors have descended upon like locusts. In that most bribable of professions fixer George Neisse can make them go away, but very discreetly.

But then Neisse turns up shot to death and Anderson has a real jackpot on his hands. Good thing he's already retained Perry Mason.

My ratings of a Perry Mason mystery rise and fall on whether and how easily I can spot the real murderer. In this case it was pretty easy because the perpetrator was real shifty and declined to help with Raymond Burr's investigation for his client.

In only a preliminary hearing Hamilton Burger's case falls apart at the seams. How that man kept his job as District Attorney is truly a mystery.

Two Women
kapelusznik1822 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
****SPOILERS**** Perry Mason, Raymond Burr, going out with his secretary Della Street,Barbara Hale, for a quite dinner at the D'Saul's restaurant is approached by George Andrews, John Andreson, of the Andrews Construction co, for help in a car accident he was involved in just about an hour ago. It's when Perry as well as Della shows up at the accident scene the woman who supposedly who was struck disappeared and was replaced by someone else who didn't have a single mark on her! On top of all that the person that Andrews was talking to prier to this strange accident Wliferd Borden, George Neise, was found shot to death in his office with him being the last person to see him alive now has Andrews, the guy involved in this bizarre car accident, being the #1 suspect not only in Borden's murder but in what is turning out to be a hit & run, by leaving the scene to get help, accident!

What you would, if you saw enough of them, expect in a Perry Mason episode in that Perry is as a cool as a cucumber in him just going through the motions in solving the case and getting his client-John Andrews-off. The case all boiled down to the women who was struck by Andrews who really was the person who was involved in kidnapping the driver who lost control of the car! That had Borden's killer who was being blackmailed him use all this confusion as cover in getting away with his crime that just had one hitch in it! The photos that Borden, who's am armature fashion photographer, took of the kidnapper didn't show the black & blue marks on her leg that she claims she got at the scene of her accident!

****SPOILERS***Perry Mason just goes through the motions here being both detective as well as lawyer for his client John Andrews in getting him off the hook in a murder case. As for the murder victim in all this Wilfred Borden he posthumously got justice done for him by photographing model Dawn Manning, Dolores Donlon, that in the end helped convict his killer Frank Fettridge, Dean Harens. Who used the excuse that he out cold drunk to sneak out of a party and do the guy in for attempting to ruin him financially!
