OUTLAWS – Beat the Drum Slowly - 1960
This is the third episode of the 1960- 1962 western series, OUTLAWS. The series ran for fifty episodes and is set in the Oklahoma Territory. Barton MacLane is in charge of a pair of Marshals who police the area. Don Collier and Jock Gaynor play the Deputy Marshals.
Two dust covered cowhands, brothers, Dean Jones and Vic Morrow, ride into town. They have just finished a long cattle drive and are heading back home the next day. A bath and a couple of drinks at the local gambling parlour, seems in order.
The casino is run by Harry Towne and is a high security establishment with numerous guards etc. While Jones takes in the dancing girls and their lead, Ann Helm, Morrow tries his luck at the roulette wheel. He soon drops his bankroll and dips into the cattle drive funds. He of course loses this. He has been fleeced by a crooked set-up.
Joined by Jones, Morrow asks for the return of his cash. Towne is not about to return anything. The Marshals are soon called and tell the brothers they need to have proof they were taken. The two are soon shown the door by Townes' guards.
They are joined by a retired judge, Ray Walston. Walston had been inside and watched the whole exchange. "How would you boys like to get even and get your cash back?" Needless to say Walston has their undivided attention.
Walston informs Jones and Morrow that Townes and his crew need to be taught a lesson. Walston has been casing the casino for weeks and has all the guard change times and security measures figured. He just needs a couple of "bright boys" to help. He already has an inside contact. Walston tells them that they will strike the next evening.
The inside contact turns out to be the pretty young lass, Ann Helm, whom Jones had been watching in the chorus line. The plan goes like clockwork and they get away with a large bundle. There was however a "minor" hiccup. Walston has knifed Towne in the gut and killed him. When Towne is found dead in his office a short time later, Marshal's Don Collier and Jock Gaynor are called. They are soon on the trial of the suspects.
The bandits all collect at the meet location to split the cash. The brothers, Jones and Morrow are less than happy with the killing. The argument over the split becomes heated and everyone pulls iron. Lead flies aplenty with Walston and both, Jones and Morrow going down for the count. Miss Helm swoops up all the money and bolts out the cabin door. Unfortunately for her, it is right into the arms of Marshal Collier.
Particularly good here, is Ray Walston's bit as the robbery planner etc. (b/w)
