The Outer Limits Sandkings, was about this guy, Simon, who is working on some 'dirt' samples brought back from mars, they find eggs in them and hatch them, trying to work out if they are intelligent. A problem arises and the project is canned. The scientist takes a sample himself because he's obsessed with it, even though its illegal and highly dangerous. He makes a civilization that worships him as god. Simon decides to test their nature, and finds them warlike when threatened and protective of the species although ant-like. He calls them SandKings. The creatures are carnivorous, which we get shown with a mouse, whilst his son is present. His wife, when finds out about his 'pet' project falls into their territory somehow and is quickly rescued, but a SandKing escapes with her. When the family dog goes missing into their enclosure, he decides they must be monitored even more. Destroying one of their 'Castles', Simon gets barbed by one of their scorpion-like tails, and becomes infected WITH them. He starts going mad. His wife, attempting an intervention, manages to push him further into insanity by involving his estranged father, whom he feels un-necessarily ignored him as a child in favor of an older brother. He screams at her and tells her to leave. She takes off with their son. Meanwhile its still brought to sharp contrast the lone creature around their home. After the failed intervention Simon calls his overseer from the official project and asks him to come over and see how marvelous these builders are. When Simon is told his discovery will have to be destroyed he pushes the overseer into the 'pit' and the Sandkings kill him. Not without a pane of glass being broken. The extraterrestrials are loose. Simons son in an act of pure stupidity catches a taxi back to their home and finds dad in a pure pickle. The SandKings are gone, and Simon must find them. No longer idolizing him as their god, they set out to destroy him. What follows is a barely heroic scene involving a gas pipe and a torch.
As the cleanup crew arrives it is brought to our attention that the lone SandKing has built a city itself. Inside a local forest. The narrator tells us that when playing god, one must accept the consequences of opening such a door. And that in most cases there will always be a butterfly effect.
