Hal (David Doremus) and Butch (Trent Lehman) are fighting over their different lifestyle preferences in their room. Hal asks his father the Professor (Richard Long) for his own room and he says he will think of it. The Professor's brother Bob (Van Johnson) arrives for a visit bringing gifts for the kids. He mentions how much Hal and Butch remind him of himself and their father. But, they were inseparable growing up and always resolved their differences. When Bob and the Professor settle down to go to sleep they see they are having trouble getting along. After a night of bickering with his brother, the Professor tells his boys they can have their own rooms. The boys now get along very well, but may be getting a little lonely.

Hal and Butch are getting to the age when they irritate each other and start lobbying for separate rooms. The Professor declines - they don't have another room to put one of them into, and besides he and his brother Bob roomed together until they went off to college and loved it. Then Bob comes for a visit and the now older brothers room together for one night - and can't handle each other's quirks now that they are men and not boys. So Butch gets the bedroom and Hal has the basement fixed up to suit him - but does it? Or does absence make the heart grow fonder?
