Yes it's true

Warning: Spoilers
Ernie takes part in a deep state cover-up. Of course that's not how they were thinking about it then.

Ernie sees a secret aircraft test and gets pictures. He also gets media attention and a booking on a local talk show.

Steve (Ernie's adoptive dad) works in aerospace and he knows what he's seeing when Ernie shows his pictures.

Steve confers with the military and they ask him to REVEAL NOTHING so Ernie clowns it up on the TV show with stories about little green men, etc. Furthering the silly notion of alien extra-terrestrials is good for the nation's security! Remember: there's a Cold War!

The truth has always been right there.

IS IT A BIRD, A PLANE, OR WHAT???

Classic episode we all remember as kids, and the grand daddy of so many later sitcom takeoffs on aliens.

Loveable Ernie, who was perfect for this type of situation, takes pictures of what looks to be a genuine flying saucer! This all leads to his being interviewed on tv, and Ernie (for a few minutes) becomes a star.

However... it's not all what it seems to be.

Remember that Steve works in the aerospace industry. He examines the pictures and it turns out that what Ernie shot were photos of a top secret test of an Air Force rocket. And the US government wants no publicity.

Still lots of intrigue, and Ernie is always fun to watch. Good support from veteran actor Alan Baxter, playing General Carstairs. Baxter was spot on in serious, poker-face roles, appearing in many cop shows. Well written by Joseph Hoffman who wrote many episodes for LEAVE IT TO BEAVER.

From SEASON 7 EPISODE 15 remastered color dvd box set.
