Ernie is easily one of the most likable characters of the entire series but comes off a little too distracted here . He should be babysitting. He's too caught up in talking to his girlfriend Angela . I know this happens a lot at that age but here it has consequences.

Ernie let's Dodie and her friend go to the store on their own . It's really not uncommon back then now it's virtually unheard of and not without reason.

The girls however end up downtown and every attempt to get home fails.

Everyone is worried, police are looking. The girls mother is understandably upset and blames Ernie who honestly gets off easy in this one.

The girls make it home due to Dodie finding a cab driver who carefully questions Dodie on different recognizable signs and buildings he's able to get the girls back to the Douglas home . Dodie' s friend tried to take credit but the cab driver points the credit to Dodie. Steve also know the driver did beyond the call of duty.

Dodie loses tv for a week but she understands . She tells Steve almost cried once or twice Steve said it was the same them.

Still I think Ernie shoulders some blame here and he doesn't seem to pay any price.
