This is a wonderful, sentimental episode, especially written for old Uncle Charley. It also shows what a terrific actor William Demarest was, who earlier in his career was nominated for an Oscar.
Ernie volunteers Charley to talk to his class about being a merchant seaman, the adventurer of the seven seas! Charley doesn't let the class down with his fascinating tales and gets himself a special fan -- Ernie's teacher, Miss Benson (well played by Jan Clayton).
Here's the catch. Miss Benson is so intrigued by Charley she wants to marry him and move to lush Pago Pago! Does not get any better than this, written by Joseph Hoffman, who wrote 11 episodes for the series, also for LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. This truly is an inspiring story, and may have been based on a real story as its not that uncommon for some people to give everything up to start something new.
Jan Clayton was a tv star in her own right, playing the original mom on LASSIE in the early 50s. She later was a board member for Alcoholics Anonymous in Hollywood, due to her many years of volunteer work. A great personal story.
By the way, plush Pago Pago is about 2000 miles from Hawaii.
A one of a kind episode, and its shame Charley didn't get married, but then again, we wouldn't want to lose him. William Demarest and Jan Clayton do make a handsome couple, though. They must have had a fun time together.
Not to be missed.
