I guess I don't really...
Hughmanity21 February 2024
...like jokes that repeat themselves ten times over losing all degree of humor or reality along the way. I love Monk but that bit with the jackhammer and Monk not being able to finish his sentence was incredibly painful. The Captain also just staring at Monk and not saying anything despite the obviousness of what Monk is trying to say, "I guess I don't really have a choice" was ridiculous and unfortunately not in a funny way. Conversely, Monk engaging in some of the other uniqueness of NYC like the subway and the street preachers is pretty hilarious.

I liked this episode overall and the 'fish out of water' play with Monk in NYC is mostly good. Sharona's hair is really something even for the early 2000s. I thought they might mellow it out a bit as the show went on but it just keeps getting bigger and curlier. I'm watching the episodes in order in 2024 so it may be unfair to reflect on the fashion of the time and Bitty Schramm is wonderful as Monk's assistant.

That's Powerful

Warning: Spoilers
I don't think there are any spoilers but there always could be.

This was a good episode-- especially good. I think that they wanted the season premiere to be a good one and I think they succeeded.

The episode plot ties in with the overall storyline of the entire series- - the one about Trudy-- and that's always a nice thing.

Also, there's a very powerful moment at the end which I don't want to ruin for anyone, but it's worth seeing.

They also work in some stuff related to Monk's issue with his phobias, this time the problem being coping with life in NYC.

But really the ending is what made it an above-average show.

New York, New York with Mr Monk
TheLittleSongbird23 July 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend.

As far as season openers for 'Monk' go, "Mr Monk Takes Manhattan" is not one of the best, the previous season openers "Mr Monk and the Candidate" and "Mr Monk Goes Back to School" for example are far better. It is however still a good episode and not a bad start for Season 3 at all, not a great one, but even 'Monk' was not at its best its not so good episodes (up to this point for me the only one to fit this distinction was "Mr Monk and the Missing Granny") were still a lot better than a lot of other shows' worst.

"Mr Monk Takes Manhattan" could have been better. While most of it is fine, some of the more slap-sticky comedy is overdone and makes the characters come over as a bit too buffoonish, such as the break in into Cage's office and with the street preacher.

Disher doesn't have much to do here, his most notable contribution is the whole thing with the Rolex watch.

However, there are also a lot of good things. One of the best things about 'Monk' has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role. It was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching. It is remarkable here that right from the first episode to when the show ended that one likes him straight away, even with his quirks and deficiencies that could easily have been overplayed, and also that he is better developed than most titular characters of other shows at this particular stage. Who can't help love Monk's brilliant mind too?

He is very well supported by a sharp and no-nonsense but also sympathetic Bitty Schram, whose Sharona makes for a worthy and entertaining partner for Monk's sleuthing and somebody with a maternal side. There is always a debate at who's better between Sharona and Natalie, personally like both in their own way and consider them both attractive though as of now leaning towards Natalie as the better acted and more attentive of the two. The two are so enjoyable together and the best detective duo of any show in recent years from personal opinion.

Jason Gray-Stanford as said has little to do, but Ted Levine is very amusing and there is plenty of the tough guy cop/loyal friend relationship between Stottlemeyer and Monk, mostly he has a professional side but also a quirkiness. The guest stars are good.

It's not just the cast though. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here on the most part, if a little overdone at times. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done mostly deft. The moments with the taxi and the "urinator" are classic 'Monk', while the concept of Monk being a fish out of water in a big city is handled very entertainingly but in a way that's also very easy to relate to (speaking as someone who was out of her depth on a day trip to London two weeks ago after not having been there for five years). Oh and before one forgets, the highlight is the very powerful scene with Monk and Tennyson.

The mystery itself is fun and engaging, it goes at a good pace and is never too simplistic or convoluted. With so few suspects though it was not particularly challenging and the murderer's motive was rather silly even for 'Monk'.

Visually, the episode is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. While there is a preference for the theme music for Season 1, Randy Newman's "It's a Jungle Out There" has grown on me overtime, found it annoying at first but appreciate its meaning and what it's trying to say much more now.

Overall, enjoyable if flawed season opener. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Impactful start

Warning: Spoilers
What a brilliant start to season 3. Classic monk annoyed by the hustling and bustling of the busy Manhattan street.

Fav part of the episode was when Captain Leland and Monk tried to communicate with each other but the construction crew kept drilling the ground everytime Monk tried to finish his sentences, it was so annoying but classic monk!

But the ending of this episode was everything, I teared up when Monk switched off the flow of morphine to the bedridden man who help murdered his wife but then tearfully turn it back on again saying , "And This is Trudy, the woman you killed..."

Such an impactful ending showing that Monk would have killed the killer , he have enough vengeance in him to do so , but he have alot of Trudy in him that held him back!

One of the better episodes of Monk! Can't wait for the next episode!

It's Time for a New Watch or Hell on Earth

This is a stellar episode as Monk and the gang find themselves in New York City. Monk is immediately done in by the noise and the crowds. He is also witness to the shooting a foreign ambassador. Monk needs to see the guy that has been mentioned by Dale the Whale. He supposedly has information on Trudy's death. All kinds of roadblocks fall in their paths. Monk gets caught on a subway car and gets separated from Sharona. Many great scenes.

Mr Monk in a post-9/11 New York
safenoe21 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's a Midnight Cowboy element in this season 3 opener of Monk. Monk, an Arab-American, finds himself in NYC with Stottlemeyer, Randy and Sharona, on the hunt for a lead into Trudy's murder. The ending is quite chilling, with Monk becoming chillingly "unplugged" with the culprit who was paid to make the bomb.

I like the scenes filmed in New York. In some you see ordinary members of the public gazing on as the filming takes place. The extras seemed quite convincing for sure! interestingly, there was no sense of racial profiling of Arab-Americans in this episode, despite it being just less than three years after 9/11.

Worst Monk episode.
stevencarthur4 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Clearly trying way way too hard in this episode. The drilling scene- interrupting Monk and the Captain was just brutal - not funny - and went on way too long. I love Monk- but this episode didn't feel like 'Monk.' Too many way outlandish moments- that felt more in line with Mr. Bean than Monk. (Mr. Monk joining the end times preacher in the street?! What?)

just ridiculous
nikestart30 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Heard about this show and have been watching/scanning from s1e1. This was the most ridiculous one. A so called genius cop who cannot follow the dialogue with street card trickery saying "I'll bring the license right now!", can't use public transport, suddenly goes into "the end is nigh" nonsense for no reason with one of these nut jobs in times square, the ridiculously long unfunny jackhammer scene etc. These aren't OCD situations, these are just examples of horrible lazy writing. Each episode writers threw a new symptom and see what sticks but this one was the worst ... so far ... btw what is up with 600 word requirement on reviews ? None of the episodes in this show had original 600 words to deserve this much writing.
