The Entire Cast in Top Form

There is a somewhat unique anomaly when it comes to McHale's Navy, it seems as though people either love it or hate it. It is my opinion that it all boils down to Tim Conway, he is the character that people either really enjoy or can't stand and if you read the reviews of this series you are very likely to agree.

This particular episode is easily among the top 10 and it's a nice example of the entire cast being able to contribute laughs and classic lines. From Joe Flynn's early tirade to McHale about his crew to Carl Balentine's classic pig Latin, "We gotta gestallen the ipnes", there are lots of laughs beginning to end.

Whether you are a fan of the show or a newcomer, this is an episode that you will enjoy.

Overplaying a scene is hard to watch.

After watching this episode it is difficult to review this show due to the many aspects of the program. The beginning of the show was more about Ensign Parker's neglect of duty while the second half of the show was more about capturing a German u-boat. It felt like watching two episodes in one.

The first half saw Ensign Parker making mistakes including firing so far off target that he missed an enemy submarine by 400 feet and end up causing damage on a nearby island. During this part Tim Conway's character, Ensign Parker, was so incompetent and foolish that the entire production was difficult to watch. We are use to seeing Parker as some sort of brainless goof but in this first half of the show the character was more sappy than usual. It was such a ham of an acting job that it was embarrassing to watch.

But during the second part of the program, it seemed to settle down and the story became more interesting and thoughtful. Even though Tim Conway still overplayed his character, when we get to the Germans it was more easier to take. There is a scene during this half where the crew talks/sings out a German song that is hilarious to watch.

Tim Conway is a funny actor that makes the show wonderful to watch. But in this episode, I felt almost bombarded with so much absurdity that it took away from the show. How stupid can someone be before it not funny anymore? You will find out in this episode.
