DOBIE -- AND THE FLYING MILLICANS?
tcchelsey5 April 2024
This wacky episode is why the series was such a hit, perhaps the most over the top of 'em all.

Pretty Yvonne Craig (future BATGIRL) plays Aphrodite Millican, member of a famous family of acrobatic performers who catches the eye of Dobie.

However, there's strings attached. Aphrodite believes Dobie could be a "replacement" for her aging father (well played by the great Francis X. Bushman), who will eventually be retiring from the act.

Time to spruce up Dobie, replete with health foods and workouts? LOTS... Laugh out loud stuff for the entire cast, and catch Bushman wearing a blonde wig, trying to look like Hercules. This goofy story was written by R. S. Allen, a veteran sitcom writer, known for HOGANS HEROES, LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE and LOVE BOAT.

Directed by Ralph Murphy, one of the oldest directors in Hollywood at the time, his career dating back to the early 1930s. Murphy was series director for MR. AND MRS. NORTH. Best of all is to see legendary silent screen star Francis X. Bushman in a truly offbeat role, and having lots of fun with it. Bushman's career was reborn in later years, especially on tv and he just ran with it. Can't keep a good actor down. He was the prime example.

Classic comedy all the way. Best of SEASON 1, and catch the remastered dvd box sets with some super color covers, released in 2020. Thanks so much to CATCHY TV for rerunning this great sitcom.
