A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH – "The Last Diablo" – 1966 This is the nineteenth episode of the 1965-66 western series, A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH. The series starred Robert Horton. Horton is a man who suffered the loss of his memory after receiving a head wound. He is now searching the west for clues as to his identity.
Horton rides into a New Mexico town and stops at the Wells Fargo Stage office. One of the few items he has had since losing his memory, is a numbered key for a Wells Fargo strongbox. Every time he hits a town with a Wells Fargo office, Horton checks to see if that is they are holding the strongbox that matches his key.
This time he hits pay-dirt! His key fits a box that has been in storage for nearly ten years. Inside he finds nothing but a small tube with a rolled up piece of paper. Horton pockets the paper, hands back the strongbox and exits. While this has been going on, a man, James Gregory, has been watching Horton from the back rooms.
Horton grabs a hotel room for the night and decides to have a look at the paper. It turns out to be a map to a lost gold mine in Mexico called, "The Last Diablo". Just then, the room door is kicked in and Gregory rushes in with gun in hand. Horton manages to knock the gun aside and flatten Gregory with a solid punch. He picks up the pistol and starts questioning Gregory.
It turns out that Gregory and Horton had been partners years before in looking for the lost mine. They had a falling out and Horton had left town after leaving the map at Wells Fargo. Gregory has been waiting for years to see in Horton would return to claim the map. Gregory tells Horton that he only knew Horton by the obvious phony name, Thomas Jefferson. Horton comes clean about his memory loss etc. The two decide to head to Mexico and see if they can discover the mine.
Several weeks later they do find the mine at the top of some rocky cliffs. Inside the mine they find a strongbox with about 30 lbs of gold dust. What they do not know is that they have been followed the last several days by a small band of Mexican bandits.
The bandits, led by Robert Loggia, now pounce as Horton and Gregory carry the strongbox down the mountainside. A brisk exchange of rounds ensues with the Loggia and his boys the losers. Gregory also catches a fatal round and drops the strongbox over the cliff edge as he goes down. The box shatters as it bounces off the rocks spilling the gold dust over the mountainside.
Horton buries the men and heads off again on his search for his identity.
Also in the cast is Susan Bay (Leonard Nimoy's wife) and Than Wyenn.
The director was veteran film, turned television man, Jerry Hopper. His film work includes, THE ATOMIC CITY, NAKED ALIBI, ALASKA SEAS, SECERT OF THE INCAS, SMOKE SIGNAL and THE SQUARE JUNGLE. (B/W)
