"Did you see 'The World At War'?"
ShadeGrenade9 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The Ropers are approaching their wedding anniversary, so Robin, Chrissy and Jo decide to throw a private party in their flat. But Robin has also invited Franz Wasserman ( Dennis Waterman ), a German philosophy student who recently graduated. With World War 2-obsessed Roper around, the insults are bound to fly thick and fast - and do, even though Franz is too young to have fought.

But the flat-mates have another problem to contend with. One of the cuff-links they bought Roper has gone missing. Robin and Chrissy fear it may have wound up in the food...

Not one of the series' triumphs. The spectacle of Robin waving knackwurst around suggestively is bad enough, but the row between Roper and Franz unfortunately culminates in the latter giving a Nazi salute and going 'Sieg Heil!'. A similar thing happened in both the first episode of 'Love Thy Neighbour' and the 'Black & White Medical Show' episode of 'Doctor In Charge'. The person on the receiving end of racial abuse decided to show the abuser up by conforming to the stereotype he was believed to be. It just did not work. When 'Fawlty Towers' served up the classic 'The Germans' a year later, it succeeded where those shows failed by making the abuser look foolish. Had one of the Germans goose-stepped into the hotel foyer instead of Basil it would just not have been funny.

Dennis Waterman was a few months away from landing the role of 'Sergeant George Carter' in the iconic '70's drama 'The Sweeney'. He is good as 'Franz', though would have been even better with a stronger script.

The cuff-link in the dinner joke lacks a decent pay-off too. It is found by Franz. I had hoped Roper would choke on it.

Funniest moment - Roper mistaking Franz for a doctor of medicine, and taking off his shirt for an examination.

Did You Ever Meet Rommel?

Robin has invited Franz a German student who has recently graduated round for a dinner party.

Chrissy and Jo decide to invite the Ropers too as it is their wedding anniversary.

Only for Robin to be cautious as George is obsessed with his anti German feelings. Both the war and football.

The dinner party ends up with George kneading Franz who takes revenge when George thinks that Franz is a doctor.

Dennis Waterman plays Franz who is forever linked playing a cockney. He does a passable German accent here.

It is an episode that descends into the usual German bashing that was common in sitcom land. All that was missing was the funny walk.
