Lucy Meets the Merm
kgraovac26 November 2023
Ethel Merman is in town incognito, and Lucy ropes the "lookalike" into doing a number for the annual Boy Scouts talent show, not knowing she's the real deal.

This is another fan-favorite due to Merman's star power but, like the Carol Burnett episodes, it's not a laugh-riot or a series best.

The first half takes its time setting up the premise, and the last half steals from Season 1's "Lucy's Barbershop Quartet" where Dr, Gitterman (Hans Conried) taught Lucy to sing. Lucy's the mentor here and Merman the pupil . Best part is when Viv runs in now knowing that Ethel's really Ethel -- but bossy Lucy won't let her get a word in: "Have it your OWN way".

It was decided late in the game to make this a 2-parter, so the last few minutes feature added-on footage that was filmed later and the ladies all have longer, poofier hair that had grown out in the intervening weeks.

Lucy is seen doing the Twist as the episode opens, giving it a fun, nostalgic touch for a brief few moments.
