Average Season 1 Episode Has Its Moments

Since she cannot afford $100 for a lawn mower, Lucy spends $40 on a sheep named Clementine who will eat the grass instead.

This is an average Season 1 episode - not the best but not the worst. The odd insert shots filmed one-camera and the opening scene in the kitchen give this one a kind of DONNA REED or LEAVE IT TO BEAVER early '60s domestic sitcom vibe. Lucy's hair doesn't seem to be as poufy here in Season 1 as it will be when they switch to color.

Vivian is the last one at the breakfast table. Other episodes will establish that Viv is not really an early riser. In fact, here Lucy has a funny line referring to Viv as "a crabby old owl".

Charles Lane, as Mooney's predecessor Mr. Barnsdahl, delivers some expository lines that explain Lucy Carmichael's financial situation. This is important for the audience to understand why she's always scrounging for money for the remainder of the Danfield episodes.

The sheep pen scene with Parley Baer has some great lines in it. I swear it sounds like Vivian Vance providing the "voice" of Clementine when the sheep won't shut up and let everyone get some sleep.

When Clementine proves more trouble than she's worth, the ladies sneak her back into the pen in the middle of the night. When they harmonize on their rendition of "Oh My Darling Clementine" it brings spontaneous applause from the audience. It's also nice that they didn't make the Lucy Carmichael character tone-deaf like they had with Lucy Ricardo. It wasn't that funny then and wouldn't have been here either.

Not outstanding for a first season show but has its moments.
