An old drifter in a deserted cabin overhears three men plotting to kill Governor Taggert. They discover him and shoot him in the back. The Ranger and Tonto arrive before the bad guys can finish him off. The old man babbles enough to say that someone is going to be murdered. The Ranger goes to bring back the town doctor and sheriff. But Tonto is gone when the three of them arrive at the cabin and the old man has been shot again and killed. The sheriff and Doctor immediately suspect the Ranger of being the killer. How can The Ranger find Tonto and learn about the danger that Governor Taggert is in? Watch for the exciting scene where the Ranger stunt man jumps from a tall rock to the top of a moving stagecoach. Deforest Kelly plays the doctor. This is the third of his three appearances on The Lone Ranger and the first time he played a doctor. It would be a few years before he moved his medical practice to the Starship Enterprise. Judd Holdren plays one of the conspirators. A couple of years later, he would have the lead in the sci-fi series, "Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe." The producers had Cody wear a mask. That was in case Holdren tried to ask for more money. They figured it would be easy to replace an actor whose face wasn't familiar to the audience. That was the same strategy employed by the producers of The Lone Ranger when they replaced Clayton Moore over a salary dispute. But that move didn't work out for them and they had to bring Moore back when the audience wouldn't accept John Hart as The Ranger.
