Caroline Ingalls desperately needed a vacation. Charles seems to agree with me, so he's decided to take her along on a freight run to Mankato and have themselves a five-day holiday. The sound of it was wonderful, but who would watch over the girls? Grace Snider, of course. Problem solved, right? Nope, Grace seems to have come down with strep throat, or the like. Looks like Ma's holiday was off. Everybody was so disappointed. If only they could get someone else. If only they could find some willing, yet gullible bumpkin to do the job. Hey, here comes Mr. Edwards! The girls told him of their predicament, and he was willing to help out. Charles was ecstatic, but Caroline wasn't so sure. It seems she never thought too highly of Edwards on account of he taught the girls some rude habits way back when. So when the ragged parents were finally away from the house, Edwards soon finds out he has his work cut out for him. Sure Mary and Laura were no real trouble, but that Carrie could sure play some mind games. The next morning, Mary and Laura had to hurry to school because Edwards accidentally got them up too late, and then he sets to work on the laundry, with Carrie offering little to no help. And for supper, Indian stew with a secret ingredient: rattlesnake. According to Edwards, it'll put hair on your chest, which is just what a girl wants. The older girls found the meal repulsive, while Carrie loved playing with the rattle. So while the girls had to partake of the creamed reptile, Charles and Caroline sat down to a fancy feast at a fine dining restaurant. I think she's finally starting to enjoy her vacation. I have the feeling that when they get back, Edwards will need a vacation.
It was a dark and stormy night. Mr. Edwards was awakened by a commotion out at the chicken coop. Looking out the window, he saw two figures and took them to be thieves. He grabbed his trusty rifle just when Mary and Laura came back inside, startling Edwards so that he dropped his piece, causing it to discharge and blow a hole in the roof. It seems the supposed chicken thieves were just the girls gathering the eggs they'd neglected that day. Well, sir, Edwards was furious; The next day, in Mankato, Charles took Caroline dress shopping. Just when she found a bonnet to her liking, in came crazy old Mrs. Kirkwood looking for her children. She'll never find them, see, because they've been dead for 15 years. Hearing this made Charles and Caroline change their minds and leave without purchasing. Back at the little house, Edwards set to work fixing the hole he'd made in the roof. He even managed to keep an eye on Carrie at the same time, by nailing her dress down. So after Charles and Caroline take in a ridiculously ironic play, Abandonded Daughters, they decide it's time to head home. By this time, the girls had finally learned to take on some responsibility themselves, especially when Edwards threw out his back giving them horseback rides. Well, Ma and Pa came home to a right clean house. Even Caroline was impressed with the job Edwards had done. Seems she worried her pretty little head over nothing, huh? So after Charles gives him a swift pat on the back, Edwards hobbled away, ready for a holiday of his own.
Gotta say this one is pretty funny. It's a classic storyline and it works just as well on Little House. Taking a hilarious, outlandish character like Isaiah Edwards and put him in charge of a household for a week. Hilarity will ensue. Now back in them days, the parents would worry all the more since you couldn't phone home. If the Ingallses had a phone, you can bet Caroline would have been calling at every waking moment. Now my favorite part has to be when Edwards tries to read Carrie a bedtime story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and come to find out he can't read so he makes up the words, describing one of the bears as "a big, mean, ornery-lookin' cuss" was hilarious. Also funny was Edwards serving the girls rattlesnake for dinner, him trying to do the laundry, and even when he gave the Ingalls a temporary skylight with his rifle. Victor French was magnificent as Mr. Edwards, who really is a great character and can be funny and incompetent without being a total buffoon about it. Watching him try to run the household was hilarious and at the same time, you could see he was really trying hard, which you really do admire him for. So if you like Mr. Edwards as well as the show in general and you want a break from the usual drama, check out Ma's Holiday.
