THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF Wyatt Earp – The Gambler - 1955
This is episode seven of the 1955-1961 western series starring Hugh O'Brian as Wyatt Earp.
O'Brian is still in the middle of his feud with crooked gambler and saloon keeper, House Peters Jr. He is paid a visit by one of Peters' "bar hostesses" J.P. O'Donnell. She tells O'Brian that Peters had just beat a man, William Bryant, out of $8,500 on a crooked roulette wheel. While O'Brian grabs his coat and hat, O'Donnell pockets a couple of O'Brians' special copper coated .45 rounds off the desk.
O'Brian has a word or two with Bryant about the game and how he lost his family's proceeds of a large cattle sale. O'Brian explains that he has a plan to save the situation. He rounds up $1000 and marks the bills. He then has Bryant return to Peters gambling house and bar.
O'Brian waits a bit and then enters. While Bryant places another bet, O'Brian upsets the roulette wheel exposing the crooked set up underneath. Peters protests but is dragged to his office along with the cash-box from the table. O'Brian finds several hundred in marked bills in the cash. Since the money was won with a crooked game, O'Brian confiscates the whole cash box.
O'Brian pays back Bryant his losses and sends him back to his ranch. Peters meanwhile has figured out it was Miss O'Donnell who made O'Brian wise to the crooked game. He pays the girl a visit and fires her. As Peters is returning to the bar, O'Donnell pulls a .45 and shoots the swine in the back.
Peters lives and is worked on by the town doc, Doug Fowley. Fowley pulls out the round and notices it has a copper jacket. The only person in town who uses these rounds is the Marshal. O'Brian is suspended from his job leaving Peters to start up his crooked operations again.
O'Donnell finally comes clean to the local judge, Sam Flint that it was she who shot Peters. She admits to stealing the bullets off the Marshal's desk. O'Brian is back at work and soon making Peters' life a misery again. (b/w)
