"Mary Jane", explained.
spcneeedle3 November 2022
"I wanna see Mary Jane" was Puddin's way of saying she had to go the bathroom. That's why Wally took her upstairs, and how she ended up locked in the bathroom. I thought it was obvious but apparently not.

On a related note, I wonder if this was the first time ever where a television character indicated that they had to go to the bathroom. Maybe some trivia whiz out there can answer this?

Overall, a fun episode. Wally and Beaver are stuck babysitting a four year old girl with funny results. Puddin' would clearly be a handful for an experienced sitter, and Wally and Beaver are no match for her.

Hard to believe that the little girl who played Puddin' is in her late 60's now....

Ward and Beaver are everything Ward has said they are, and more.
pensman26 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The boys are planning to spend Saturday at the Firehouse helping Pete polish the fire engine. Ward and June are planning on going to a wedding. Herb and Janet Wilson will be driving the Cleavers so everything seems to be fine.

Ward and June are ready to go but there is a problem: the Wilsons have their daughter with them. Their plan is to leave her with Beaver and Wally as babysitters. Ward has frequently boasted that his boys are mature and trustworthy. Somehow this translated to Herb as they are qualified babysitters.

Helen is put into her portable crib but she isn't happy which makes it tough for the boys. Helen, "Puddin" keeps saying she wants to see Mary Jane. The boys try giving her everything they can but no success. Fortunately, June calls and is able to get the answer from Mrs. Wilson: Mary Jane is the bathroom.

Now we have a real problem. Puddin has locked herself in the bathroom and is making a mess. She's throwing all the glass bottles into the tub. And she's covering the door knob in tooth paste. The boys aren't panicking yet, but they need to do something and quickly.

The boys try using a ladder to get up to the second-floor window but they can't' get in through the window. They can see the sink is full of water and is overflowing. Bengie, who is in kindergarten and lives next door, asks what the boys are doing. The boys think they might get Bengie in the window and have him open the door. They get him in but the door knob comes off in his hand. Now they have two kids in the bathroom.

Wally finally gets a good idea. He calls Pete the Firemen to see if he and the fire department can get the kids out. The kids are out. Apparently, the boys cleaned everything up because their parents haven't said anything. During dinner the next day, Ward mentions Mrs. Wilson was so happy with Beaver and Wally that she would like them to babysit again. The boys aren't interested. Especially if the Wilsons have bathrooms.

Turns out one of the neighbors told Ward what happened. Ward is proud of his sons for showing just how clever they really are. Wally figures Ward and June know what happened but aren't saying anything which he takes as a good sign. When June asks Ward if he is going to say anything, he says no. When he was a boy he was the happiest if something happened but his parents just let it go.

Funny, but strange episode
vitoscotti12 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Asking Wally & Beaver to watch Puddin' seems against common sense. Where are the remnants of the battered bathroom and flood. Wally asking Beaver & Benji to go on the roof was irresponsible. Ward seems stuck being a taxi a lot to prop up scripts. Doorknob happens to fall off. Where's Burt Mustin busy on TAGS? Swiss cheese fun scripts, but a classic sitcom, and terrific cast.

WALLY AND BEAVE VERSUS PUDDIN!
tcchelsey6 May 2024
Producers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher MAY have been inspired by the Little Rascals/Our Gang for this wacky story. It sure has that slant, bringing back memories of an episode where Spanky had to babysit a room-full of wild kids.

Luckily(?) ... Wally and Beave ONLY have to baby sit a little girl called Puddin, well played by child actress Gabrielle des Enfants. Whether that was her real name or a play on words, remains to be seen!

Ward and June are invited to a wedding with Puddin's mom and dad, so the guys are elected to keep an eye on her.

What follows is the most outrageous of any babysitting episode the series ever had. This little girl is TROUBLE. There's a great bit from little Joey Scott, playing Bengie, who ironically, would also cause some problems for Beave in later episodes.

Joey later became a well known tv producer.

Creative writing 101 defined. 10 stars.

Best of SEASON 1. And many thanks to MEV for running these fun episodes in glorious black and white.

Average writing.

Why would they use their bathroom? It seems more logical to let a girl use June's bathroom. And we know June digs through the trash and checks everything in the boy's bedroom. Even if they cleaned up the mess where are the broke bottles and why doesn't June notice all the toiletries that were wasted??

We'll just skip the knob falling off INSIDE the room. If the little boy unlocked it Wally could have opened the door with the outer knob......which was attached to the shaft.

Not very nice to ask for a favor and then scream at the boy for wanting his candy bar returned. Good thing Eddie Haskell was the 'RUDE" one on the show.

Who the heck is Mary Jane
LukeCoolHand3 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I thought I had seen the poorest episode of Leave it to Beaver but NO. This one takes the cake. Beaver and Wally are left to babysit a little girl alone . She is about 4 years old and the thing is Wally and Beaver at about 8 and 12 years old would NEVER be left alone to babysit a 4 year old. The little monster locks herself in the bathroom and begins throwing and breaking everything in sight. Then Wally gets Beaver and an even younger little boy to climb the roof to get into the upstairs window so he can unlock the bedroom. This is totally out of character of Wally to do such a thing. Also the little girl keeps saying "I wanna see Mary Jane and we never learn who Mary Jane is. I suspect this may have been because the episode was cut for time. Anyway a very, very poor episode I don't care to see again.
