Odd...really odd.

This installment of "Kraft Suspense Theatre" plays more like a pilot episode than usual. I am glad it wasn't the beginning of some series, as the writing just wasn't very good--as it was too talky and full of sneers.

Leslie Nielsen plays a former DA, Paul Maytric. A year ago, his wife was killed by mobsters and he's made it his life's goal to destroy organized crime in the gambling industry. Much of the time, however, his work takes him to showdowns with hoods and there is a LOT of sneering and word-play---way too much. In fact, the entire show just seems pretty phony and never convinces. A waste of some decent talent and a misfire.

I wouldn't take you offer of help even if I thought it was honest!

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** After his wife was killed in a car bomb explosion meant for him San Ramos D.A Paul Maytric, Leslie Nielsen, took it upon himself to run the crime syndicate that's running the town out of business single handedly. Quiting his job as a D.A Maytric became a crime fighting lawyer where he can do more to fight crime then as a public and elected, by making deals, official. It's the case of the rubbing out of crime boss Joey "Bones" Kane that Maytric got his big chance to those holding the town of San Ramos hostage put behind bars. That in defending the person that's accused George Baird, Walker Edmiston, in sending Kane riddled with hot lead to kingdom come.

It turned out that Baird, in Maytric's opinion, was innocent in killing Kane but what he uncovered was soon to put the entire crime syndicate running the town out of business. With Maytric starting to put the squeeze on head mobster "Dapper Dan" Jack Sallas, Richard Conte, he soon unknowingly uncovered the person who not only murdered Kane but his wife as well! That without "Dapper Dan" knowing about it. It was non other then "Dapper Dan's" corrupt in his pay ex-con policemen Sgt. Phil Scanlon,Larry Pennell, who without "Dapper Dan's" knowledge was shaking down casino owner Elmer Pike, Macdonald Carey. That to keep him from revealing to his boss who was the person who killed his second in command Joey "Bones" Kane; The man who had Maytric's wife murdered!

***SPOILERS*** There was a cover up in all this that centered around casino owner Pike that coincidently brought down "Dapper Dan"s" crime empire. The fact that Scanlon went on his own or free lanced to knock off Maytric but ended up killing his wife started the ball rolling. As for Pike he was covering up something too that had nothing to do with "Dapper Dan" whom he worked for. But that cover up and it being exposed by Maytric did both the guilty, in Maytric's wife's murder, Scalion and innocent, "Dapper Dan" Jack Sallas, in at the same time!

Who shot who?

A young, improbably handsome Leslie Nielson plays a former DA whose wife was accidentally killed by the mob. As a private citizen, he is now out to get a big time mob boss, played by Richard Conte, who's muscling in on the casino business in a mythical Nevada (or California) town. The boss currently is trying to buy a casino operated by MacDonald Carey, who harbors a deep, dark secret having to do with the death of a low-level mobster. This is a highly interesting and complex plot, and bears careful viewing. Seeing veteran actors Carey and Conte together with the up and coming Nielson is an added hoot. No twist ending, for a change. Definitely worth watching. One small gripe: in order to pad out the running time, the director or editor keeps cutting back to a dice game that quickly gets repetitive.

Jungle Cunning

A typically well mounted Kraft suspense episode, nicely shot and well acted, it deals with gangsters and good guys at odds with one another in what appears to be a thinly disguised Reno. Macdonald Carey plays a seemingly honest casino owner with issues ,--but what are they? Leslie Nielsen is a former DA who's trying to get to the bottom of things, never easy to do in a city whose primary business is gambling and where personal loyalties often interfere with professional conduct.

The story has many twists and turns, a little romance, some tough stuff, some nice glimpses into the life in a city where gambling is legal. There are some good small character part for good actors, notably Michael Pate; and the leading players are both outstanding. That the ending is more tragic and therefore dramatic rather than, as one might have guessed, melodramatic, lends this episode a touch of class. The color is beautiful, much better than the brighter hues used in color shows from a few years later.

It's an above average episode that should hold the interest of most viewers.
