Throw Away the rule book, nothing to lose
bkoganbing29 November 2012
This episode of Kojak starts with detectives Harry Guardino and Jed Allan trying to bust a counterfeit lottery ticket racket. But Allan who is a flashy guy who doesn't always play by the rules gets himself killed and the killers get away because of something that Guardino is hiding from his late partner and the rest of Manhattan South including Lt. Kojak.

Guardino finds out that the stomach ulcers he thinks he has is now an inoperable and terminal cancer and he's got only a few months to live. Now with absolutely nothing to lose, he gets very unorthodox and throws away the rulebook to bring down Allan's killers.

The episode is dominated by Harry Guardino and his final confrontation with racket kingpin Malachi Throne is some of the best acting ever seen on a Kojak episode. Fans of that series should not miss this one.

Harry Guardino displays some of the finest acting ever on film

This episode is an absolute cracker, I wont go into a plot summary, but Detective Ben Furore (Harry Guardino) is out for revenge for the death of his partner. This episode epitomizes the quality of the Kojak series, it is gritty and supported by a very strong storyline, it has the fast paced script that makes Kojak in a class all of its own, plus those great New York accents.

One of the main items I'd like to express is just how absolutely fantastic Harry Guardino's performance is, his final speech at the end of the episode is so intense emotional and passionate that you well up with emotion yourself, simply top drawer acting, one day I'm gonna build a games room and have loads of photos of my favorite stars on the walls, Tele Savalas (who I met when I was 11)will be up there and so will Harry Guardino.

Tip, watch this episode without interruptions, it builds in intensity to a wonderful crescendo, so your buddy butting in and saying "I wonder why Kojak went bald" will ruin it.

Some serious plot holes here....though Guardino is excellent, as usual.

Warning: Spoilers
"Dead on His Feet" is a very frustrating episode. It has many wonderful things going for it...a nice plot and, especially, a wonderful performance by Harry Guardino. But, sadly, the writing really disappoints near the end and the ending simply is illogical and dumb.

When the story begins, Detective Fiore (Guardino) sees his partner gunned down during a stakeout. While Fiore normally might have been able to help, he was powerless as he's a dying man...and he's told no one. It turns out he has inoperable stomach cancer...and he's got nothing to lose if he decides to take on the guilty man and ignore his sworn duties as a cop. Can Kojak and his men find Fiore and prevent him from taking the law into his own hands?

There are just too many problems with the finale to speak about here. Suffice to say, Fiore's plan doesn't make sense and only works if the police arrive EXACTLY on time...though there is no logical reason to assume that will happen. Sloppy...and disappointing.
