Bob Denver's one shot at genie glory
kevinolzak3 November 2016
"My Son, the Genie" guest stars Gilligan himself, Bob Denver, in the one time only role of novice genie Harold, required to spend one day with an old genie to earn his stripes. Since he's the eldest son of Haji, king of all the genies, Tony and Jeannie must tread carefully in teaching him how to work his magic. Meanwhile, Dr. Bellows reveals that Major Nelson has been chosen to welcome the President of the United States at his home for dinner. One genie is tough enough, but two turn out to be even more nerve wracking, but whether sweeping up or tossing the salad Harold can't seem to get anything right (he always wanted to be a chariot driver!). The recent cancellation of GILLIGAN'S ISLAND meant that Bob Denver was now searching for new opportunities and hadn't lost his slapstick acumen. The only script delivered by Bill Richmond, fresh off several projects with Jerry Lewis, so this was his forte; in fact, Lewis himself was supposed to play Harold!

Escape From CBS

Warning: Spoilers
The magic of this show even brings escape from Gilligan's Island for Bob Denver. Here he is Haji's son in training. He bumbles more like Aunt Clara on Bewitched.

It is fun to see our little buddy get on dry land and ditch the skipper, professor and the rest. The mistake is ditching Mary Ann. I would like to see her here in a Jeannie Costume.

Denver is pretty much in top form and some magical moments happen for comedy.

This series had a lot of great guest shots and this one does not fall flat at all.

This season actually has been pretty decent until this episode. Gilligan as a guest star really does not work. Jerry Lewis was supposed to play Harold but backed out at the last minute. He probably read the script.

The slapstick in this one just was not funny, it was too dumb. Maybe cause I have never been a big fan of Bob Denver but I think Jerry Lewis in this episode would have been funnier.

Boring and childish

The junior genie is just awful and ruins the whole episode. Avoid this one at all costs, you'll never get that time back again and life is short.

Series 3 is quite bad in fact. Each series just gets worse. The first series was great. The second was ok and this third one is just terrible.

It makes the mind wonder just how much worse it will get in series 4 and 5.

Watch this one at x2 speed whilst on in the background so that you don't waste much time on it. Do something productive whilst it is running, like writing IMDb reviews or cooking your breakfast or cleaning the bathroom or hoovering.
