1. At the time that Duncan first encountered immortal Devon Marek in Scotland a few centuries ago, Marek had developed a taste for hunting and killing poachers. One poacher however gets the best of Marek, plunging a knife into his chest. Duncan MacLeod arrives on horseback just as Marek is about to experience his first death. Duncan feels the "buzz" of another immortal, or at least he thought he did (Duncan has just met a pre-immortal for the first time). Marek dies and Duncan buries him, not realizing that the man is an immortal because the "buzz" did not feel the same as the buzz he had felt in the past. The grave is shallow which is good because Marek revives as an immortal, clawing his way up out of the loose soil. After Duncan explains his mistake he attempts to tell him about immortality and the rules and the facts of being an immortal. Marek has always been one to give orders and has no tolerance for receiving instruction from Duncan, and he states that the rules do not apply to him. Marek eventually catches and kills the poacher, and Duncan kills him in a brief battle. Two armed guards are witness Marek's death so he is dead to that part of the world. Not only does he lose his relatively lofty position, he also loses an inheritance. Although Marek is really not entitled to any revenge, I can understand why he held a grudge against Duncan for so long. 2. Present day and Duncan is enjoying the company of another gorgeous woman. She is kidnapped by Marek who takes her to his office tower where she is used as bait to draw Duncan into a fight against several paid gunmen. Once again Marek shows no regard for the rules of "The Game" when he pays these gunmen to pursue Duncan. We see Duncan using all of his skills and abilities as an immortal to survive.
