The last two seasons of Here's Lucy saw a shift away from Lucille Ball's trademark physical comedy to more character-driven and conversational comedy. I find the change refreshing and this episode is a prime example.
Vanda Barra and Mary Jane Croft move into Lucy's house temporarily so they can support each other while dieting. This set-up gives the episode a kind of proto-Golden Girls situation to play out even though the vibe itself is more early 1970s Odd Couple.
Thankfully, the writers don't stoop to base humor in this one as the decadent cake does NOT end up in Gale Gordon's face, so another bonus point for that.
