Act IV Saves This One
lrrap16 May 2014
Throughout the run of "Gunsmoke", Miss Kitty was forced (all too frequently, it seems) to fend off crazy dudes who fell madly in love with her at first sight.

"The Dreamers", for the bulk of its running time, is a rather routine variation of this familiar plot device. However, the episode ends up being something rather special, thanks to its final act.

There is also a standout performance by the distinguished Irish actor Liam Redmond, whose role is unfortunately fairly one-dimensional...that is, until the final scenes.

The plot is somewhat contrived, since we are to believe that the presence of a competing saloon in Dodge City---even one that sells its whiskey at half the price of Miss Kitty's Long Branch---would almost immediately steal ALL of her customers except for Matt, Chester, and Doc.

But Act IV deals with the aftermath of Kitty's decision to close up and sell her saloon, and it is here that things become much more interesting. There is a touching scene with bartender Obie, nicely played by the fine actor/comic/Western singer and musician Shug Fisher. This is followed by the climatic scenes in the darkened, deserted Long Branch Saloon, where we are sure that Matt is FINALLY going to put the moves on Kitty (but..no.)

Next, we witness an over-the-top "flashback" scene (though newly filmed for this episode), beginning at 40:40, where a Miss Kitty voice-over recalls the "roarin' times" she has experienced at her beloved saloon. Check out the staging of this wild n' crazy vision, wherein we see the Long Branch in full swing, with Matt, Chester, Doc, and Kitty all taking part in the revelry. It's also filmed in one continuous shot- -sort of like a poor man's version of Welles' "Touch of Evil" opening.

The final confrontation brings some real conflict and tension into the plot, and the very last scene is genuinely moving, thanks again to the fine performance of Liam Redmond, and the typically high quality of Gunsmoke's acting and direction.

A good show that uphold the high quality of Season 7's latter half.

Ms Kitty has to close the Long Branch
kfo949420 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Henry Cairn and Jake Fogle are two miners that have hit it rich in the Colorado Mountains and are on their way to the Mississippi River to purchase their life-long dream of owning a riverboat. They stop in Dodge to have a drink when Cairn spots Ms Kitty at the end of the bar. To him, Ms Kitty is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen and vows to make her his wife.

Cairn gets all cleaned up buys some nice clothes and heads over to the Long Branch to ask Ms Kitty to marry him. Problem is that Kitty wants nothing whatsoever to do with him or his dream for a riverboat. This sends Cairn away with an idea of how to get Kitty to say yes to the marriage.

He buys the rival bar Lady Gay. And cuts the price of beverages so far below actual cost that there is no way that Kitty can compete. Due to her money loss she elects to close the Long Branch. Cairn feels the closure will force Kitty to marry him. But he finds out that he was wrong.

His friend, Jake Fogle, finds out that Cairn has lost most of his money and wants to find a way to get Carin to forget about Kitty. The only way that Fogle can think is to kill Ms Kitty. So Fogle finds Kitty with intend to kill her when Cairn enters the room.

Amanda Blake is never as beautiful as she is in this episode. From her dresses to her descending the stairs in a flash-back scene- she is a ten. The story was rather far-fetched but the interest level certain. A nice watch for viewers.

For a change Kitty gets to show some range besides "another beer Sam. On the house." Involved. , believeable and Matt almost hugged her. Interesting ending.Yet another bromance though.

Excellent scenes and Kitty is an 8
bmulkey-3426028 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has a good storyline and powerful scenes especially the one that takes place in Kitty's mind. The one where where the Longbranch has pure ruckus and Matt is wreckless. This is obviously just in her imagination. Also, Liam Redmond ( also in 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken' film) is a good guest star.

As for Miss. Blake's beauty she was an 8 or 9 in her heyday on Gunsmoke and she was more beautiful than Suzanne Pleshette though the other women mention in the 2star review were all 10's.

Not good at all
LukeCoolHand6 November 2021
Every now and then an episode of Gunsmoke comes on that is so poor I can hardly sit through it and never want to see it again. This is one of them. Something really happened to Gunsmoke when it went to the hour long format and it's not a good thing. I would rather see a good 30 minute episode over and over again than one like this again.

The plot of this episode is done over and over again with a crazy man trying to MAKE a completely turned off woman his bride. This time it is Miss Kitty for at least the 3rd time as A hillbilly kidnapped her to be his wife and another crazy man played by John Dehner was determined to wed her. Why doesn't Miss Kitty pack a pistol to stop these scumbgs from bothering her ?. And as a side note a lot of the reviewers really think Miss Kitty is a real looker. She is not. One even alludes to her as being a "10" in this episode. I would rate her as a "6" at best - she is hard looking with way too much make-up. If she is a 10 what do others rate those that were guests on the show who are much better looking. Women like Sue Casey, Karen Sharpe, Lola Albright, Sherry Jackson, Katherine Ross, Angie Dickinson, Suzanne Lloyd, Joanna Moore, Suzanne Pleshette, Patricia Barry, Norma Crane, and many others. Even the writers think Amanda Blake is beautiful because they are always having some loser remarking something like she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen and then stalking her. Anyway I think Amanda Blake was a great actress and when she did an episode without so much make up she looked better maybe a "7". Why didn't the writers ever write an episode where Matt tells her how beautiful she is and marry her or at least kiss her? Now that would have been great !!!

This is love?
gary-6465914 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Liam Redmond and J. Pat O'Malley play two mountain men who have returned to civilisation with $10,000 each, on their way to the Mississippi River to buy a riverboat and set up in business together. Redmond is smitten by Miss Kitty -- and naturally drives her out of business, determined to ruin her life so she will have to marry him. This isn't enough to prove his love, so he kills his partner (who is about to shoot Kitty dead), and this solves all. All is forgiven by Kitty, who just concludes the meathead was a "man with a dream" that didn't work.
