You don't get much classier than Ruby Dee, playing Blanche's childhood nanny Viola Watkins, coming to ask her for a music box she once gave to Blanche's father whom she had a secret past with. Blanches upset because Mommy Watkins disappeared without saying goodbye, and as it turns out, she really had no choice but kept her relationship going with Blanche's father anyway, standing in the background on several important occasions in Blanche's life. Dee is warm and funny, and there's amusing anecdotes in regards to the late Daddy Hollingsworth that you didn't get when the character appeared on screen. Anecdotes and secrets concerning a music box and his bible are particularly amusing.

Warning: Spoilers
Blanche's mammy, Viola, comes over one day. She heard that Big Daddy died and wants to have a music box she gave to him. Blanche refuses too. Soon she finds out that Viola and her father had an affair. She doesn't take it well, but mainly because she is mad at Viola for leaving her without saying goodbye.
A sweet story.Viola is a great character who was well created and well played. And the story is well done. At first one is a bit mad at Blanche for acting like this, but then one sees why she was hurt.
And interesting story on matchmaking interesting because of seeing the attitude of society back in the days.
