FLIGHT "Final Approach" 1958
FLIGHT was a military television series that ran on in syndication on U.S. TV during 1958 and 1959. The series had the full cooperation of the US Airforce for the production of the 38 episode run.
In this episode, the three man crew of a Boeing B-47 Stratojet bomber is returning to base after taking part in a training run over the desert. They are coming down to land at their California base when a problem develops. The front landing gear will not deploy.
They climb back to altitude to check out the problem. They go through the various checklists trying to find the fault. The pilot, David Cross, gets on the horn to the base command. The commanding officer, Ross Elliott is called in to talk to the crew. The co-pilot is played by, Don Nagel with Jimmy Murphy as the navigator.
Elliott gets on the phone and calls in the Boeing man on base. They bang heads trying to come up with a solution. The Boeing man calls up the plant at Wichita and has the design staff go over the blueprints etc.
The Air Force sends up a tanker to top off the fuel on the B-47. The flight is into its 10th hour and crew fatigue is creeping in. Nothing the crew tries is working and everyone is starting to get worried. The pilot's wives are soon calling wondering where their husbands are.
Finally the higher ups tell the crew to fly out over the desert and eject. The pilot though has an idea, he asks for the landing strip to be covered its entire length with fire foam. He intends to land the bomber on the foam and hope for the best.
He brings down the Stratojet down just missing the start of the foam covered area. Sparks are soon flying but no fire catches as the planes slides onto the foam. The crew makes like the wind and run for safety once the aircraft stops.
